connecting via VPN

I am going to be Connecting HQ to a remote Store for the first time via Broadband.

Is the best method to create a VPN & enter the VPN Name as the location of the HQ Server in Client set up or is there a better way?

I'd recommend that you create a hardware VPN with identical routers at either end.

Remote machines should be able to ping the HQ server.

Use the HQ Server IP address in your HQ Client config.

I use hardware VPN endpoints at each location (Netgear FVS318 routers). This works great if you have relatively stable IP addresses. These particular routers sometimes fail to reestablish a VPN connection after an IP address change. Resetting each box easily fixes the problem. You ger other benefits of a VPN connection this way. You should put your HQ and store ops servers on static private IP addresses and use the IP address in the client setup. In fact, in any environment I recommend using IP addresses rather than server names.

You can use port forwarding to accomplish everything you need also, but you lose the other benefits of a VPN.

Tell us more about your setup and maybe we can offer more insight.
