credit card gift card balances not authorized properly

We use RMS and PCcharge.

When a customer presents a credit card with a limited balance, for example, $3.50 remaining, and wants to charge $10.00, it seems RMS (and PCcharge) together cannot recognize this. When we get our credit card deposit, we can be short $6.50.

This can be a big potential loss for us. Has anyone else seen this? If so, is there a solution? I am thinking of putting a $ limit on transactions such as these - or doing a voice authorization for any transaction over $25.
