PCCharge Client and Credit-Card Processing freeze every day!

We are operating two locations with Microsoft RMS. Our current credit card solution is PCCharge v. 5.7.1i. Our version of RMS is 1.3R.

Every day, card processing will freeze up in the middle of a transaction. Unfortunately, this almost always results in a double-charge to the card being processed. In order to fix it, we have to restart the machine. It is odd because the Payment Server continues to operate with no problem.

We have PCCharge Client installed on every machine for gift card processing. I'm wondering if the two are clashing. We are only experiencing this in one of our two locations and it started only recently. I can't associate it with any change in hardware or software.

Any ideas?

Alex,

My recommendation would be not to use PC Charge with RMS. Use the RMS built-in credit card processing.

re: The freezing- Check if any other software like Norton Antivirus are downloading updates at that time every day ? Remove the auto-update if possible. (Update manually)

Alex,

One possibility... We had the exact same problem. It happened in Quicksell, we switched to RMS and it continued to happen - even though we switched from PCCharge to RMS's processing. It finally went away when we switched our receipt printers to USB. I can't tell you why, but once we switched, the problem was eliminated. It's been 8 months and (knock on wood) no lock ups. We found that with PCCharge and even with RMS, something would happen in the handoff from credit card approval to the completion of the sale in the POS system - so just like you said, card would go through, but the sale would not complete in the POS. System would lock up, it would look like the sale didn't go through, so we'd run it again and get a double charge. If your printers aren't USB, I'd switch right away. It may expensive to make the change, but it was worth every penny. I had tried everything trying to solve the problem - new computers didn't work, clean install of XP Pro didn't work, upgrading to RMS didn't work, using RMS for card processing didn't work - nothing worked until changing printers to USB - they are the exact same models, just done in USB rather than parallel. I'd love to hear someone's opinion on why this may happen.
