Help Question about Credit Card processing!!

Another question in the quote from the local partner he mentioned if I went with RMS Citibank processor I would need to purchase a keyboard with the credit card swipe on it for approx. $600 and it would take approx 4 - 8 hours at his hourly rate to set up the credit card processing. This seemed a little high. I am not sure I could justify the simplicity of the computer knowing without me telling it the credit card is swiped for $ 1000 or more compared to my current stand alone credit card machine. Any advice on this would be appreciated.

I don't want to knock my local partner and not complaining if that is what it really takes to implement seamless credit card processing. I just don't know if I can justify that cost because we only have one register.

You can get a Mini Magtek USB Magnetic Strip Reader(MSR) that retails for $85.00 you just have to plug it into your computer and it is ready to go, no configuration. To setup just the Credit Card processing it should take 5 minutes to enter the information into RMS another 5 minutes to setup your Tender Types, print a Z-Report and then less than 30 seconds to do a test transaction. If you are adding a PinPad if all goes well maybe tack on another 15 minutes to setup and test.

Setting up Credit Card processing is typically an easy thing to do. Of course there are exceptions like when you start adding pinpads and signature capture devices and they don't do what they are supposed to do or when you start getting errors when trying to post a transaction. If you double check you EDC configuration and all the numbers look like they have been entered correctly then it usually signifies that the Merchant Service Provider has not setup your account correctly.

Lastly there are other Merchant Service providers out there that might be able to give a better rate. i.e. Mercury Payments

or any Bank that has the ability to process on the Vital/VISANet network. It doesn't have to be with Citi, BofA, Paymentech or WellsFargo. Personally most of our clients are using Mercury Payments we find them very helpful and easy to setup. The longest part of setting up is downloading the installation file but once you have downloaded the file it takes 5 minutes to get going.

Lisa, Forget the special keyboard, like Rob said you can get a seperate one, and listed below is a link to a website I like to use, who sells the products new, but very fair priced. Again to confirm what Rob said I recently chose to go with Mercury, after they reviewed my current processor, and were able to beat the rates by a little. The set up takes a few minutes, and they have a support group who is great. If you accept EBT you will need to keep your current credit card provider as well though...and that won't go through the computer. Also if you accept Debit cards, you will need to purchase another peace of equipment Verifone pinpad...personally I would only recomment setting up RMS to accept Credit Card transactions, use the stand alone to process Debit/EBT transactions, as there are not many of them...and much less of a headache. Best of luck.

Thanks so much for the answer Vince. You sound like an actual user of the product. I am really torn because I really like RMS but my local partners in my state (only 2) are not gurus. I am sure they can handle "setting me up" but there expertise is on other POS systems. My business is a service oriented business. I have suppliers who only sell to me and not the "mart" store so their customers have experts working on their equipment. So I really don't have a problem paying for service. I just have a problem paying for ok service at a lower rate but costing more in the long run versus quality guru service whose hourly rate might be twice as much but it takes

1/4 the time. As a user do you think if I purchase RMS I could use a guru that is not local? How important is the fact the partner is 10 minutes from me verus over the phone?

Thanks aga> Lisa,

Lisa and Vince,

From you business model Lisa I highly doubt you need to do EBT but FYI you can do EBT with the RMS plug-in from TPI Software, this also opens up the possibility of using many more different types of processors. i.e. First Data, Concord EFS, Global as well as VITAL.
