Backup for Credit Card Processing

Our internet connection (DSL) goes down sometime when there is a phone call coming and this causes issues with processing credit cards. Thinking of getting a Credit Card Processing machine such as Verifone 3200 or Hypercomm T7 (these seem to be compatible with Mercury Payments). The suggestions/input I would like from the group is if this backup plan of using Credit card machine is a good one or there is a better option, second which model and brand of credit card equipment you would recommend. Lastly, what type of tender should we use if we do credit card outside of RMS?

As always, Thx for your guidence

I can't answer your questions about a backup plan...but here's what I do when we process credit card transactions outside of RMS (we do this for our internet sales).

I created duplicate tender types for Visa/MC, Amex, etc. and specified tender type of "other" > Our internet connection (DSL) goes down sometime when there is a phone call

MOI,

First, you need to make sure that you have a DSL filter on every phone device/line in your store. Sounds like you missed one if you're dropping connections. If you didn't get enough in your DSL install kit, you can get them from your telco or Radio Shack.

Second, you should consider getting a router/firewall that has a dial-up modem backup port that you can attach a regular dial-up modem. Have the modem attached to a phone line and it will automatically dial-up your Internet provider when the DSL line goes down. You need a dial-up ISP account, but with most DSL ISP's give you a 20 hour dialup account for free or like $5.00 per month

Our current favorite routers with this capabilities are from NetGear FWG114P (wireless) or FVS338 (wired), favorite firewall/UTMs Check Point Software Technologies' Safe@Office or SonicWall's TZ-170 both have wired and wireless versions.
