Debit card entry

Am I correct in my assumption that Debit Cards simply cannot be manually entered? Credit cards can, but I have been unable to find a way to manually enter a debit card number - even when the same card functions as both. If I run it as a debit transaction, I must use my card swiper, or run it as credit.

I ask, because my cswiper is on the fritz at the moment....

Steve,

There are debit cards that can only be used with a pin number and can't be used if they won't swipe (or your swipe isn't working). There are debit cards that can also be used just like a credit card. if the card has a Visa or Mastercard logo, it can be used as a credit card (keyed in or swiped with no pin). Many cards issued nowadays are dual purpose and can be used either way. Thus the prompting on pin pads at retailers that try to encourage use with pin numbers that may be less expensive for the merchant.

Hi Steve

Unfortunatly once you manually enter the number of any card you are going to be charged the higher rate as a merchant. You only get charged the lowest rate once you verify by pin (this is their way of creating an incentive to use it)

What Marc said about the cards is true, most of them are combined with Maestro now so can be entered manually, but there are still some behind the times.
