Ingenico 6550 and Debit Card Processing

I am looking into purchasing about 50 Ingenico 6550 units to be used in a chain for credit card/debit/signature capture.

One major issue that is holding us back is the way debit cards are processed.

It is my understanding (although I don't know for sure) that when you swipe a debit/credit card it gives you the option of debit/credit.

We would like the system to automatically identify a debit card and ask for a pin number. The customer can choose credit at that point, however it will default to debit (asking for their pin).

In my research I have found that you can customize the ingenico unit to do almost anything, but I am wondering if someone has already done this.

Can anyone help me here? Any ideas?

We really want the units, but in order to cost justify them we've got to run more debit transactions.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Eric
