Debit card processing problems

I have some configuration error that is preventing my debit card processing from working. I use the prefd provider option in RMS, thru Wells Fargo (Vital). I have very successfully been processing credit cards for over 6 moths now, but recently decided to add debit cards to the mix. The service was set-up, I recd an encoded pin pad from WF, configured the OPOS ( tests successful ) then wasted over 8 hours transfering around between different groups and tech support at Vital, WF, and wherever, so I think I have the right numbers in the EDC (sharing group and ABA), but it still wont work.

Last night I found KB 891317 and have run through all the tests, and the only one that fails is the ping to ssl.pgs.wcom.net - all others (https: connections) pass fine. What the kb doesn't tell me is what to do now that the ping test failed - Any ideas anyone?
