Different Reorder/Restock points for Store and HQ?

May 31, 2007 10 Replies

Can I have different Reorder/Restock points for the same items at different locations? I'm planning on using the Transfer in feature at the stores, bringing items in from HQ (warehouse), rather Purchase Orders. Then do Purchase Orders from HQ to replenish the warehouse, but I have different stocking quantity requirements at HQ then I do at the store. Is this possible?

Thanks,

Johan

Perfect. Thanks!

"c> Hi Johan - yes, you can define different reorder/restock points for the same

Not sure you realize this or not, but you need a Store Operations License for your Warehouse Location. HQ doesn't actually have inventory of it's own - you can generate POs from HQ, but they are actually processed and received at a store.

I was under the impression the licenses only appiled to how many instances of POS you can have running simultaneously. Is this not the case? You're saying that if I've got a warehouse location running HQ and a remote store with 3 lanes and a back office I need a total of 5 licenses in addition to the HQ license? What I understood was that this would require 3 SO licenses for the remote store which I can install on 4 machines as I won't be running POS on the back office, and the HQ license for the warehouse where I'll be running the HQ part. Am I mistaken?

I think if you are planning to track inventory and transfer out from the warehouse location to other stores that you will need a POS license for that location also. So if you have 3 lanes at the remote store, and you plan on tracking inventory and transfering inventory out of the warehouse location, you will need a total of 4 licenses. Also the license has changed for 2.0. You now have to register the machine that you plan on running POS. Which means that if you need to change machines you will have to re-register the new machine before you can run POS on it. The old license allowed you to use any machine for POS as long as you didn't go over the number of licenses you bought. Craig

What if I want to have two machines at the warehouse/HQ that can both run transfers between the warehouse & store as well as handle receiving and POs for the warehouse? How many licenses do I need at the warehouse? Sounds like 2.

Then 3 licenses for the remote store to run POS on 3 lanes and SO Manager on the back office. Have I got this right?

The transfer in / transfer out does not use the functionality of a POS lane, so you only need one license at the warehouse (basically a POS license you will never use unless you want to generate sales/invoices out of the warehouse location). You will use the Store Ops Manager application to execute your transfers; SO Manager is not a licensed application,

Each remote location (ie warehouse, store(s)) will need an HQ client license in order to exchange information with your HQ database. RMS is not a fully centralized application, as the stores retain a great degree of functionality and flexibility (ie they can generate and receive their own purchase orders); HQ acts as a central repository of store transactions primarily for reporting purposes and through the use of worksheets you will have the ability to push down purchase orders, transfer outs / ins, and make changes to item properties such as prices, reorder points, etc)

OK, so now I'm thoroughly confused.

I have two locations:

  1. a store in a mall - has 3 POS lanes and a back office computer running SO Manager.

  1. a warehouse - has 0 POS lanes and a computer running SO Manager. This is also the location of my HQ Server. It is from this location I plan to handle all Purchase Orders, then push to (or be pulled from) the store via Transfer In/Out.

How many licenses of what do I need for this to function? The way I understand it would be 3 SO licenses for the store (3 active POS lanes and an additional machine running SO Manager) and 1 SO license for the warehouse (1 machine running SO Manager with an unused copy of POS), along with 1 license of HQ which happens to be at the warehouse. Is that correct?

Does that then mean that I can add machines at the warehouse under the same license in order to run SO Manager?

Sounds like you've got it.

3 SO at the store 1 SO at the Warehouse + HQ (2 stores)

You can have unlimited machines running SO Manager only at both locations.

You need HQ Client installed on one machine at each location.

If you have just one store plus a warehouse, you might want to talk to your reseller about possible alternatives. There is at least one add-in that will allow you to sell in one location while delivering from another (warehouse) without HQ. I'm not recommending that, as I don't know nearly enough about your business, but unless you expect to grow beyond 1 store + 1 warehouse it may be worth looking at.

This get to the crux of the HQ inventory tracking problem. Wouldn't it have been easier to include a "store ops" manager-only database license with HQ so that HQ could be used as an actual warehouse? I don't get the logic of MS requiring you to have a full POS license to track inventory at HQ when you never need the POS functionality.

Fortunately for me, my HQ warehouse is also a store, so I need the POS anyway. But I can imagine many situations where people need to track warehouse inventory seperately, regardless of whether thier HQ warehouse is physically located at a store or not.

What a mess. I wish they would basically scrap the system and start over.
