Error: failed to create windows users/groups or add the sql loggin

I'm trying to install MS POS 2.0 on SBS 2003 But after install I get this error: Error details: failed to create windows users/groups or add the sql loggins. This is from the after database install wizard. So I cannot start the program without finishing this wizard.

Do you know where is the problem?

Thanks

Loading thread data ...

Restore database manually via osql/sqlcmd or sql management studio..

do you have the privileges to restore a database on your sql server? or the admin rights?

I'm in the same boat. I have a Win2k3 Server that I installed SQL 2k5 Standard on & when I install POS v2.0 on that server & then the Microsoft Updates for the POS install everything was fine.

When I started the POS application it kicked off the database wizard & I chose to create a database, because I want all my POS registers to use the full SQL 2k5 installed on the server, but I received the same error as noted in the beginning of this thread, something about not able to create the user/group accounts, so the database creation failed.

Did you find solution to our problem ?

I did try to install POS 2.0 without pre-installed SQL or with etc and nothing is working.

Hi beba,

Yes I did find out the solution. POS v2.0 is designed for Windows XP or Vista. It installs (without complaint, something Microsoft should fix) on a Windows 2k3 Server but it cannot create a database because of the difference between the desktop/server OS SAM databases. On my Win2k3 server I'm also running Active Directory. POS cannot manipulate the SAM database to create users/groups for the database it?s trying to create. When they say POS can run on a full version of SQL Server they expect you to install XP or Vista, then POS, then SQL on a PC. The other caveat I found unacceptable for us is in order to get POS to communicate with QuickBooks you need to have QB installed on that same PC. POS isn't able to point to your QB file on a server share.

So the bottom line is, POS is designed for a PC, not a server & if you want to trust running you company off a PC instead of a server, then POS is for you.

RMS (Retail Management System) is the other option from Microsoft, but I'm not sure if it's also PC based or can successfully run its database on a server.
