How to set up barcode scanner to recall prior transactions

Glenn just helped me with this so I can tell you it's not possible the way you think is should be. You still have to go to the lookup screen first.

Maybe I misread your question - I thought you were just having trouble getting the barcode to scan. No, you still have to set a range before scanning the receipt.

this in SO Administrator - use File/Connect to log into the database, then use Database/Set Next Transaction Number.

I don't follow. Are you saying that with a 5-digit transaction number there is a way to recall a transaction for refund without having to set a date range?

F11 recall defaults to todays date, so if it's a transaction from the current days transactions, go to F11 recall a transaction for return or void a transaction whichever is relevant. Hit enter, if it's from a preious day you will select the correct date, then hit enter. Make sure transaction number is selected(will have a little arrow pointing to it), and scan the barcode on the receipt. The desired transaction should be displayed.
