Initial Setup Single POS Station Printer

Have converted client from QS2K all is working well except:

With a single workstation, at the end of day/month when running the Z report, nothing prints.

Using STAR SP200 Windows XP SPK2 RMS1.3 Windows Printer format since there was no matching choice using the OPOS from Star (after their software installed, from within their software)

Created 2 receipt formats using the defaults, called one basic sales (using the receipt.xml template) the other Journal Z (using the xreport.xml template).

If I specify for printer 1 , check to print automatically, and chose my basicsales template in the options box, receipts print great, but no z report.

I tried to configure printer 2 to print journal receipts using the journalz template I created and what happens is every sale prints the normal receipt then an z report summary with nothing in it. Nothing then prints when you do a Z report.

I have tried every combo to print, I get 2 no data z reports when a sale is made. I get a receipt and no z reports ever.

What am I missing as I have searched through the posts and need to resolve this ASAP?

Thanks,

Ed

Ed,

You don't need 2 printers, just select the X/Z Report as part of the Receipt Format. Last line of your basic receipt format says Report. Click on the magnifying glass and select the stock MS, for starters, XReport.xml. OK and exit POS. Go back in and Z it out.

If that works, then you can modify the XReport.xml file.

Madness Has Set in....actually I did figure out what was different on the test system and the real system last night about 11:30. When you choose a "format" the software prompts to apply that as a default to ALL of the choices, which it did. So naturally with printer 1 set to print the "sales receipt" and printer two (ALL values set to my z report) the z, every transaction printed both.....

But for some reason it does not 'default' to the report choice, henceforth no printed Z report

I did get it working last night (VPN into the store) but still had both printers 'set.'

Jeff THANKS, this morning it all fell into place with your suggestion.

Why does it 'require' you to setup both printers during the initial setup? I think that is why I was thrown off and kept trying to get 'both' working on the same printer....

Thanks again.

Ed,

Its not really a requirement, it more of a warning. When you create a new register, the program sets the Journal option for both printers, so that if you make a sale, it will be recorded in the database. Kinda stupid, but whatever, I've seen worse. The only thing you really needed to do was to uncheck the Journal for this printer on the Receipt Printer 2 tab.

Jeff:

Another discovery which most likely means I'm missing a setting (and equal footing, brain fog..).

Did the single printer thing and the receipts print fine and the journal correctly on the x, z, & zz!

However! For some reason on a subsequent sale (and not the next after my tinkering) no receipt printed at all. So they sent the customer on the way. The came to the store office and got me (I'm almost 80 miles round trip at $1000 a pint for gas). I said, "no problem" we can print a duplicate." Sorry Charlie. For whatever reason now there was no journal duplicate (electronic) of each sale from the management section.

How I fixed it. Printer one prints the receipt and prints the journal using the receipt xml template. Printer two only prints the journal using the Z Report template. This seems to work and now we have the electronic journal of each receipt.

I got the milk from the cow so to speak, but is there an easier way?

Ed,

Still don't understand why you are setting up 2 printers. You only need one if printing to a single printer or receipt format.

Manager | Database | Registers | Receipt Formats | properties of your format | make sure you have a template selected for each line, including Report

Manager | Database | Registers | Register List | select the register | Receipt Printer 1 tab | make sure that Journal receipts is checked and your receipt format is selected | Receipt Printer 2 tab | Do not print and uncheck the Journal receipts, otherwise you will have 2 journaled receipts per sale.

Now when depending how you setup the print option, RMS will either, not print a receipt, ask to print a receipt or automatically print a receipt. Whichever you do, a Journaled copy will be kept and available for reprinting.

You should also look into connecting to the store via a direct or Internet connection. We connect to stores all over the country from our offices. Remote Desktop is free in Windows XP Pro, others are pcAnywhere, VNC, Remotely Anywhere, LogMeIn, etc.

I understand I shouldn't need to use the second printer option since there is only one physical printer, but when I switch it back to a single printer and use the journal option with the zreport.xml (Used the original X report and saved as..) there no longer is an electronic 'journal' copy of each receipt. At this point it works, configured the way it is and the store owner is getting the similar results that QS2000 provided.

Thanks for your input Jeff as the $$$$$ support isn't something alot of small business owners are going to buy into, especially with a single register. I have followed the Intuit product via a friend who is a Quickbooks consultant, but even with the verison ?5? now there is little support for hardware outside of their standard package.

I'm not sure what I would even recommend at this point to a new startup under similar circumstances.

Thanks again.

BTW the VPN via Linksys RV042's and broadband cable worked without a problem to use the Manager portion of the program. The advertised connection speed is 7 Mb Down/ 512 up real world is about 5500/450.

Ed,

Dunno, I've set it up hundreds of times just like I mentioned earlier without issues. Maybe a funky drawer

Basic RMS Maintenance is $232 per year, per POS lane. Is .64 a day to have access to CustomerSource with its training, reports, receipts, the Knowledgebase, updates to the program and have access to a MS support person here, really too much!
