Leaving the Computer ON.

What would be the best setting for the PC at the register to be set for the night so that the next day the the salesperson simply just starts using the register.

Put the PC in a Standby Mode? Hibernate?

And, can the same procedure be applied to the PC that is used as the Server?

Tom, I asked that question about 4 months ago and got a variety of recommendations. Basically what I do now after reviewing all the recommendations is to leave the machine on all the time and shut off the monitor at closing. I have various utilities, scans, backup, etc. run at different times throughout the night to maintain the computer in top performance. I then have a batch file run at 7am that restarts the computer. I have found that a lot of little headaches disappear if you restart on a regular basis. The only thing our cashiers have to do is log into windows and then onto RMS. This has worked well for us, no computer freezes, no restarts in the middle of the day, and a well thought out backup plan. If you would like any of my batch files let me know and I will email you. Craig,

Thank you.

What software to you use to run your backups? Acronis?

Tom, No other software is needed. I have a batch file with an OSQL command line to do the backup to the local drive. I then have a script to copy the backup to an external harddrive, but you can copy it anywhere you would like. Then you use windows task scheduler to schedule the backups. Everything is done automatically after we close. I also have defrag, reindex, virus scan, and restart scheduled. Craig

Craig,

What would you do if someone stole your server and your external hard drive? What about a small fire and/or water damage? Personally, I would investigate some sort of offsite backup solution.

Thanks for the suggestion Allen. I do copy my backup to a thumb drive and a networked machine weekly and take it home. As far as theft goes, it would be hard(not impossible)for someone to get to my equipment without anyone noticing. Especially since I have video protecting it. Craig

Another option would be to check your registers bios to see if it supports turning on the machine on a time schedule, and have it set to start-up a bit before you need it. You can still set-up a batch file to run utilities and scans automatically at shut-down -
