RMS Offline database setup

Hi all,

How do i setup up the offline database? The part that i am getting hang-up on is when i go to create offline database it ask for backup database, where do i get this from?

And do i setup up an offline database for each register that is connected to a main server?

Thank you in advance.

This is how I would do it. First, it would be best to do this up when the store is closed and you have closed out all registers so you can setup and test.

I would use the empty database template that comes with RMS to setup the offline db. Create a new db and give it a recognizable name. Store it on the register PC. It will populate correctly after the first time you Z out the register when it syncs to the main db.

You will have to make sure you have the server software installed on any PC that you will run an offline db on. Use the local server as the server when you setup the offline db, so it does not depend on the runtime server. We use use a separate local db (stored on the PC that is the register) for each register as its offline db, for maximum uptime. Even if every other PC crashes, you at least will have a register up and running.

Example: Your main runtime server is called Server and is on the pc called Server. I name the 1st register pc "Register1 and setup the server software on that pc with the name "Server1". Create the offline db saved on the same PC with the name offline1. Then do the same for any other registers (Register2/Server2/offline2, etc). Make sure the server software starts on Windows startup (I think it happens by default on normal install).

Test the setup by Z'ing out the register. If everything is working correctly, you should see a message box that shows files syncing to the main db after the Z reports run and then get a successful sync message.

If you have any trouble syncing after you Z out, you may have to open a port in your firewall (1433 ??).
