Ian,

The offline database is a backup system so you can continue to do business in case the network or server goes down. I install the server software and create an offline database on each register so they can run independently if necessary. The offline database on the server is not really necessary.

Just to point out the usefulness of this system, I was on vacation, when of course someone crashed the network. They were able to continue doing business as usual until they got hold of me and I was able to walk someone through getting the network back up. If you are using internet credit card authorization, consider running a backup authorization system too, either dial-up credit card terminals, or a phone line/modem backup connection for your PC's in case your DSL or Cable goes down.

It's a little extra setup work, but peace of mind and no lost business!

just so i am clear

On each computer i will create an offline database correct..

so i should not create a single offline database on one computer (not the server) and connect each computer to this offline database

That is the way I suggest to do it, a separate offline database for each register.

Hi, As it is said, the offline database is a backup system - you can not do all actions in POS, read the manual/help about this. Also you have to take into account that when the connection with the server is lost and POS goes to offline mode the information is from the time of last POS closing (Z-report or blind close), so if you have changed item prices meanwhile, you have wrong (old) prices then.

You could use a different computer as the server, load your copy of sql to it and repoint the registers to that data source. The problem is going to be getting the backup restored to that sql installation. Your team fixing the server is probably the same people that will have to break away to figure out how to restore the data.
