Microsoft Point of Sale - Cashier Rights

Feb 04, 2009 7 Replies

Background: One of our customers is a school store in a local high school. They previously were running PCRegister and we recently upgraded them to Microsoft Point of Sale (read: not RMS).

Question: After installing the system, the customer asked if he could change the rights for the cashiers, as in change what they can/cannot do on the frontend. It seems to me as if there's no "easy" way to do it and a colleague informed me that he thought there was no way, period. Normally, this wouldn't be a big concern, however it is in a high school and he has over 60 kids working for him and he can't really monitor everything they do.

We set all the employees to cashiers, granting them the least access, but they can still change item numbers, void/return transactions, and give out discounts among other things. He wants to limit them further.

Is there any way to restrict the rights of employees in Microsoft POS beyond the default levels?

What are the differences between MPOS and RMS? Where in POS do you make configuration changes of any sort?

Microsoft POS and Microsoft RMS are completely different programs. Most changes are made in the manager view portion of POS, but like I said, I can't figure out how to change cashier rights.

I talked to Microsoft tech support on the phone and they said that there is no way to change cashier rights beyond the defaults. I find it hard to believe that they would allow anyone to perform voids, returns and discounts without implementing some security measures.

Does anyone know of any third party programs that might do this?

For MSPOS, the answer is almost certainly no. It's just not built to be extended by third parties.

The POS User Interface is not extensible by 3rd party developers whatsoever. The next version (due out in a few months) should resolve this issue completely.

Have you tried to contact the customer support team? I have used them many times and they are very helpful. They have different levels of support members to help even the most complicated questions and problems regarding their POS Software.
