Microsoft RMS Point of Sale- Credit card transaction question

When you tender a credit card in the POS software, it brings up a screen that asks you for account number, expiration date and approval code. Is this screen something you can turn on or off as a preference? What if the customer does not want to type this information in by hand? Thanks...

You Can suppress the screen by changing the Tender type From "Credit Card" to "Other" ... If you have an MSR you can scan the card to enter the Card # & Expiration. You can use EDC to get the approval code.

Glenn:

I have a question somewhat related to this issue. Starting about a week ago, when our cashiers swiped a credit card, the card # and experation date populates the screen Andrea mentions, but when they click OK, the proccessing screen pops up and the card is immediately denied. The cashiers are required to type in the card number and exp. date to make the transaction occur successfully. What's the difference between scanning and typing? Also, would suppressing the screen, as you prescribed for Andrea, solve this issue for us? Thank you in advance; we need to find a solution quick because it costs us a buck per transaction we type in!

Beau,

You reader needs to be re-programmed.

Look at this KB article to describe how it should be sending the info to POS;

Beau,

You should really invest in MS' Maintenance Plan as you are missing all of the articles in the Knowledge Base, in addition to all updates.

Here's the pertinent part of the KB article;

CAUSE This problem occurs because the magnetic stripe reader is configured incorrectly. RESOLUTION If the magnetic stripe reader sends the data from the magnetic stripe through the keyboard port or through a keyboard wedge, follow these steps:

  1. Start Notepad, click Format, and then make sure that Word Wrap is turned off. 2. Swipe a credit card through the magnetic stripe reader. In Notepad, the data from the credit card should appear in the following format: %B1111111111111111^DOE/JOHN^YYMM111111111111 22222222222? ;0000000000000000111111111122222222222? 3. If the data does not appear in this format, contact the manufacturer of your magnetic stripe reader for information about how to program the magnetic stripe reader to format the data this way.

Note The data may contain a carriage return or other incorrect special characters. In the data, the same special characters that appear in step 2 should appear. The percent sign (%) and the semicolon (;) are the most important characters.

I really appreciate the assistance. This system was inhereted and, unfortunately, we're not able to afford that type of Microsoft support. We will certtainly get it when we can. Thanks again for your assistance; I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks,

Beau
