Problem connect SQL from RMS

I think server name should be (local) not [local]

I have just been having exactly this same error problem for the last few days since I upgraded my SQL Server 2005 Express. Whenever I restart my PC, the successful "Server name" changes. Worse than that, I then accidently discovered that different credit & debit card sales listed under "Settle EDC Batch" under Utilities in SO Manager. So I am now settling any sales BEFORE I restart or shutdown my PC. Except for one batch of three credit card sales, I cannot get them back listed under the "Settle EDC Batch" screen. Luckily I have the 4-days old signed slips but I cannot settle them b/c they would never display again to settle.

I am suspecting something called SQL Server "instance"s as the culprit!? Any one can help!? Thanks,
