i have to reinstall windows and RMS. i need to make sure that i save all of the data. can someone help me with the steps to make sure i dont loose any data.

Use Store Ops Administrator and create a backup. Then copy that backup file somewhere safe, flash drive, ipod, another computer etc (can't have too many copies!)

making a copy of this registry key and sub keys can help also for setup parameters:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Retail Management System
not unless you are using some special drivers now.
