single item number into multiple bins

Hello, we are trying to use RMS to track inventory for an air-conditioning company with 10 service vehicles, the problem that I am having is for example if I want to show 5 rolls of duct tape per truck, RMS only seems to allow for only on bin location per Item number. As I don?t know of any business that can properly control inventory without the ability to store merchandise in multiple bins there must be a solution, does any one know how to place a single item number into multiple bins?

Well, I think that you are going to run into issues because you are trying to use a retail inventory system to track product that are used in your service business. You are going to have issues that RMS is just really not prepared to deal with.

There is no way to assign quantity to multiple locations built into RMS. About the closest thing that I can think of is to assign the rolls of tape serial numbers that indicate the truck. There is an add-in called "Multi-Location" from Retail Realm that adds this functionality, but I still think that you are going to continue to have problems tracking consumable items as though they were inventory for sale. Contact your reseller for more information on Multi-Location...

Everyone keeps items in multiple bins. RMS only keeps a single count. The Bin Location field is just text, so you can enter a comma separated list of multiple bins, but RMS only cares about the overall count. Multi-Location will allow you to keep multiple counts for a single item, but it will really only work if items from a specific bin are always sold through a specific register.

The difference in retail inventory and the service truck inventory that you presented before is that you don't SELL a roll of duct tape. You pull off the 30 feet that it takes to complete the SERVICE you are being paid for. You probably work off of two or three partial rolls at a time. You don't measure how much tape is being used and charge by measure like you might with Rope or Carpet in a retail store.
