spyware

Norton Antivirus reported a potential threat from spyware.spypc and subsequently make the file dwshk36.ocx unreadable.

I am using Store Operations 1.2. When I launch the point of sale, windows wants to find and install this dwshk36.ocx file, otherwise it will not run.

I'm really stuck here. Any suggestions on how I should proceed? Does Store Operations 1.3 not use the dwshk36.ocx file? Should I reinstall my backup and choose not to remove the spyware the next time Norton Antivirus finds it?

Can't really functions without our cash register... Thanks for your prayers and suggestions.

We just had two of our clients this evening have this happen to them, the way to fix this is insert your RMS CD and repair the installation.

1.2 or 1.3 they both use this file.

I knew I wouldn't be the only one to see this. I can see repairing the installation, but won't Norton flag it as a problem again? And if it does, would you choose not to remove the threat?

Thanks for your help. FYI, I reinstalled the dwshk36.ocx file from another machine, rebooted and the software ran fine. (Norton hadn't made this file unreadable yet.) I'm not sure, but it might be a file used by the company that manages the copy protection.

I am not sure what RMS uses this file for either but all I know it is needed. The only thing I can think of is that if it comes up again not to delete/quarantine it. Microsoft recently became aware of this issue and is making a KB article not to delete the file.

Ron,

For some reason this has just started happening for both McAfee and Norton in the last 2 weeks. RMS has had it installed for at least 2 years.

Both programs will continue to delete the files until they fix their programs. In the meantime, if it comes up again, they both have an option to ignore the file.

Started seeing this problem this morning at some of our stores..So the problem is Norton Antivirus? Is there a way to specifically go in to Antivirus and specifiy files to ignore without it running a scan? I also just replaced the file from the CD and things worked fine...

Let me know if this KB article ever materializes. I would love to be able to send it to all (70+) of our stores using RMS.

As Jeff said just choose the option to ignore if it comes up again.

Are you talking about ignoring the quanranteen of spyware.spypc? or is there some way to quanranteen only the file spyware.spypc and not its associated file, dwshk36.ocx?

Ron,

Go into Norton | Options | Anti Virus | Manual Scan | Exclusions | New | browse to button | C:\Windows\System32\dwshk32.ocx | uncheck Include Subfolders | Ok and Exit.

I don't have the steps for McAfee yet.
