Double Customer Record

Hey There - I am having a glitchy problem with QB Premier 06.

I have a duplicate customer name in my customer list. But the duplication did not result in me entering the name twice. It just appeared twice on it's own.

Whenever I edit the info on one, the info updates on the other. All Invoices and Payments are listed under both BUT the invoices and payments are NOT posted twice in my accounts.

I have tried making in Inactive and then Active again. I have tried to resort the list in QB.

I cannot delete the customer because there are several transacations for them going as far back as 2006. So I thought about creating a new Customer Name and then transferring all the transactions over BUT that would take forever with all the invoices, payments, and deposits...especially for 2006 since the year is closed.

This is the last error on my verify log that I need corrected before I can use the Clean Up Utility, as I cannot get a proper Verify, Rebuild without the error being removed.

Does anyone have any advice? I would rather skip this problem all together and just do the clean up as it is not affecting the money part of QB. But if there is a fix, then please let me know.

Thanks so Much!

It's a miracle. Lord be praised. Or perhaps just plain old data corruption.

I would create a new customer and then try to merge the problematic customer into it.

Try "touching up" one of the records. Add a character to the name field (e.g. "Duplicate Customer 1". Save the record.

Open the record again. Delete the extra characters. You should find that QuickBooks prompts you about their being a same name and asking if you wish to merge. Say Yes to this, problem solved.

If that does not work, you may have to redo the transactions against one of the records, and try to delete the recalcitrant one with no transactions.

Thanks guys! I actually resorted the customer list in single user mode and that did the trick! Go figure. THANKS!

But first make a copy of your .QBW file and try it there. If it works OK do it in your regular .QBW .

If the first approach did not work, delete "Copy of .QBW" and make again a new "Copy of .QBW" to try the second one. This way there should be no 'cross pollination' of errors.
