Filter problem

May 14, 2006 7 Replies

I have item description as follows:

A-01 A-02 A-03 B-01 B-02 B-03

This is a very simplfied example to demo. my question:

I need to filter on the A only. Is there a way to just select PART OF THE STRING. The transaction report has thousands of these items I need to select only the "group" A

AS a matter of fact I need to get just the total Quantity of A or B etc.

Some background:

I look to the P&L report and I see total direct material cost Then I zoom on the figure and get a second report with all the transactions that represent that figure. I want to filter this report to show me only group A etc

Is that possible with QB2006 Premier

Best regards

Don't know what Premier 2006 can do as I haven't installed it yet, but one option comes to mind. Can you export to Excel and sort from there?

Well, the leading part, anyway:

x > "A" and x < "B" ?

HeyBub....

That what I was looking for ...a way to manipulate the item description. I will give it a try and ..."I will be back..."

Well...failed miserably.....

If you bear with me....the only place that accept string in my specific example is if you pick in the filter "Multiple items" QB gives you a line to input your selection: Of course I did not write the x I just wrote

Can you give an example OF THE CONCEPT if you have the time. Or may be direct me to the right place. QB help was very abstract about it.

I think he was jerking your chain.

I believe that you have to do what you want one of two ways:

1) Export to Excel and do it there 2) New item A. New item B. Edit all old A items, make sub-item of new A, same for B, C, etc.

I just love your expression "Jerking your chain...." Well no time wasted...WE are here to "jerk" our brains anyway.. THe reason I did not comment on the Excel Idea was I have a very "Lazy" Managing director and he said that "you[me] claim that QB can do any reporting I need WITHOUT ANY HELP from you...."

Well, he is definetly not an excel Guy( and I am not ready to invest in VBA to automate it for him). So, I have to persue another avenue. Let me ask this question

I have a detailed inventory transaction and I need to get a report on the major Category Here I mean A subtolal followed by B subtotal So, if I have A,B and C I will get a 3 line report giving me the subtotals which constitute the the figure I was zooming in.

You see from "his" point of view I am looking at a huge figure that gives me total direct material in the P&L I zoom in and I need the Category report which tells me what this figure consists of. Then I can zoom further and use filter to get the details.

It is that Summary report that I need to create for him to be able to zoom further to a certain Category.

In my view this is a very logical request and I do not mind spending time on that. BUT I NEED HELP
