You didn't say what version you're using. I'm assuming you're trying to import via .iif I usually recommend that people first create a few items manually then export the item list. Open using Excel and this will give you the format QB uses and will also show you what info goes in what column. Finish entering your inventory into that file, save as an .iif and import to QB.

I usually ask people to give me enough information about their problem before I attempt giving them a solution.

No, you usually offer no help and alot of insult. Tell me though, how exactly is the procedure I described anything but a general and simple solution to a list importation problem? The OP was pretty clear on importing items, and doing so simply, being the end goal. Maybe I'm missing something but from my experience there's only so many ways to import info to an item list.

The OP was not clear at all. If I wanted to answer the question then I would begin by asking a question such as what type of file are you importing from? I certainly would not waste my time making assumptions that may or may not be correct.
