installing old version of QB and old patch

my computer crashed (thanks Bill Gates, for the "update"), and I reinstalled QB 2000 Pro, and the patch I saved from when I first installed it. The patch does not install, and the reve remains at R1P. So, it will not restore my backup file, saying it is from a newer version of QB.

any help? I don't need or want any newer QB features or support. I just want to use what I paid for.

thanks.

Try downloading and installing the patch again:

Pay attention to the note about the patch file name. If it still doesn't work, provide some details of the error messages. Also be sure the patch installer displays the correct folder location of your QB 2000 install.

thanks. that patch installed fine. Now my version is R8P.

But, I still get the message that the backup file is from a newer version of QB. That cannot possibly be true.

next idea?

thanks!

Right-click on your .QBW data file and select "Properties" from the context menu. There should be a tab page on the properties dialog named "QuickBooks" which will have a value for "Last Opened With". What is the value?

I no longer have a .QBW file, I have only my .QBB backup file

Do the same thing to the QBB file.

There is no tab page on the properties dialog named "QuickBooks", and thus no "Last Opened With".

I am using XP SP2 (just upgraded from SP1).

thanks

Ahhh, you know what? I think that property dialog enhancement was installed with later versions of QB than 2000. Let me dig around, I'm pretty sure I came up with a way to get the version history from a QBW file by doing a text search in WordPad. I'll post back in a few minutes.

A text search doesn't seem to work on a QBB file. Probably due to the file compression. The only solution I can think of is to view the file property dialog on a machine that has a later version of QB installed (probably QB 2003 or later). You need to find out what version of QB archived that file. If you are absolutely sure it was QB 2000, then it is likely corrupt. Not uncommon with QBB files. I always advise user to use ZIP to archive QBW file backups to avoid this problem.

Jeez, I hope I can recover the data. I make backup copies religiously, and they are supposed to work!

I think I have a friend with a newer version of QB, I'll see what we can come up with.

thanks for your help

this has to be a QB software problem. I went back to half a dozen backup files over the past several years, and all have the same "problem".

I'll see if my friend has a newer version of QB.

tried a few more things, then dug around and found I had a copy of QB Pro

2001. installed that, and the new patch from Intuit, and viola!

Too bad their error messages are not a bit more helpful!

Thanks for your assistance. I have a new question, which I will post in a separate thread.

"Gil Faver" want to use what I paid for.
