Multi-User error

I'm on a LAN using 5 user QuickBooks Pro 2005 and just added new PC to network. I can access the shared directory OK.

Permissions grant all read/write etc. and firewall is off on the new PC for everyone, however, when trying to open company that's on new PC from other computers I get this:

QB multi-user error - first error message says unable to open this company file.

Then a message that "The user who is using this company file in single-user mode has not switched to multi-user mode yet. You cannot open this file until they have done that."

But the new PC is in multi-user mode. I've tried everything that's is help files and qb.com support. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

First, is the remote PC's disk drive mapped on each remote machine? If not, do it. The second thing to try is switch it into single user and back into multi-user. Then if that don't work do a rebuild on the file.

As for other things, can someone across the network open one of the sample company files? If so that indicates the network is in fine shape and the problem is with the specific company file.

Another thing to try is build a brand new empty company on the remote PC and see if you can access it.

I suspect thought that the first or second thing I've said will clear the problem.

Hello GCG,

Thanks for your suggestions. I mapped the one PC I'm testing with and tried all your suggestions - even a new company but I get the same error.

I'm able to open sample .doc files in the directory though...

Its very possible that one of the other computers on the network is the culprit. Sometimes logging off or exiting the program doesn't execute properly and the company file stays in use. Try rebooting the host machine (where the .qbw file resides).

I tried it with all other PC's off too, and still get the error. Thanks.

Rippy,

I'll take a shot.

Is the OS Windows XP, service pack 2 ?

When you shared the folder, did you UNCHECK the "Read Only" box in the properties?

In SP2 , by default, it is read only. You have to uncheck that box.

Go to your host unit, where the QB file is, and right click on the directory you are sharing. Click on Properties, then the General Tab. Read only is under attributes.

If this doesn't help, what OS are you running, and which service pack?

rippy,

Should have added that you need to go to the Sharing tab also in properties.

You should already have the Network Sharing and security box checked with "Share this folder on the network" and the share name. Be sure you checked the box "Allow network users to change my files".

"Off" is not sufficient. Once an instance tells the master that "I'm here," it has to tell it "I'm gone." Log each PC on to QB, then exit.

Problem solved as follows:

  1. I rebuilt co.
  2. I removed QB from new PC, reinstalled and updated.

Now all PC's can access in multi-user mode.

Thanks group!
