Opening up in muliti user

Something changed in our quickbooks settings. We have quicks books premier Manufactering 2004 running on Windows XP.

When it is started it says something about (multi user)(admin) in the title bar, then it pops up a dialog box saying something about adding a new user yes or no. but that dialog box is up for only a split second before all of quick books is shut down.

Funny thing is we never set up mulitiple users. We have always had it running on 1 computer and there never was a username or password to access it.

My question now is, how can I get quick books back to how we had it before. Because now when we start it up it doesn't let us click on anything and then shuts down.

Help!

I have some new information on this "problem that may help someone to help me diagnosis the problem. I installed quickbooks on another computer. I then opened up our data file with absolutely no problems. No pop ups asking me if I want to create more users and then giving me no time to do so before shutting itself down.

I feel really strongly that somehow we inadvertently reset the program to be in the mulituser mode. Because like I said in the title bar of quickbooks it is displaying

QuickBooks Premier Manufacturing and Wholesale Edition 2004 (multi- user)(admin)

Like I said we never set it up to be multi user that I know of and I don't know how to undo this and I don't even have a chance to look around.

Is there a way to start quick books up in safe mode or somehow so I could try to reset this problem.

thanks

Is the file open on the other computer by any chance? Can you go to the other computer, open the file, select File>Single User Mode then Close Company and exit the program? It maybe that the previous opening of the company file didn't close properly.

No the file is not open on the other computer. It was doing this before I had installed it on the second computer. So the settings for single vs. mulit is stored in the back up file? I can try this but I am just confused as to why I can open it on one computer and not the other.

Go to any computer that could open the file. Don't try and open the file, instead open one of the sample files. Set the sample multi-user. Then set the sample single user. Now open your company file. Should work.

Thanks for your suggestion,

I went to a computer that was opening our company file. I then opened a sample file, changed the settings from single user to multi user, then I changed it back to single user.

I then opened the real company file on that computer. Shut it down

then reopened it on the computer that wasn't working. It did the same thing.

Quickbooks would open up and then shut down again.

But interestingly enough I was able to open up a sample company on the offending computer but still not our company file on our orginal computer.

Any more idea's?

Grab your most recent backup. If its an uncompressed .qbw file then make a copy before attempting to open it. If its a .qbb then use the restore feature, it'll leave the .qbb intact.

Well I tried to restore, but still I am stuck on this error message. Check out the link to see what I am seeing.

It seems no matter what this error message pops up. I am ready to do a complete reinstall of windows so Quickbooks doesn't do this anymore. Is there maybe a registry setting that keeps quick books in this multi user mode.

It has been a long time since I set up QB.

What happens if you answer yes? I would think that at that point QB would ask for a second code, and, if you didn't have one, would tell you that one is needed for multi-user, and force a single user option.

Next idea. No company file open. Pick utilities rebuild. Rebuild your company file.

If that fails, send the file to QB data recovery.

This is really weird. the computer was running slow enough the yesterday day that I was able to choose yes and then actually go in and add additional users, but QB just shut down like it did before the only difference was that I was able to get a little deeper into the program.

One time I even got as far as switching it from multi-user to single user but the EXACT same thing happen QB just shut down as before.

It seems like QB is on a time bomb once started. But the smoother windows as a whole is running the less time I have in QB. If windows is creeping along then I have a little more time to be normal in QB but still whammo it shuts down.

Golden California Girls,

But the problem is I have access to my data just not on the computer I am wanting to have access to the data. I am very close to just re- installing windows on that computer and freshly re-installing all the software. It has been running a little slower lately anyways so I could kill 2 birds with 1 stone. "So to speak"

??? You mean, all this time, you have a working QB file on another computer?

Then here is what you do. On the computer you are having problems with, Uninstall QB, and clean windows. Run anti-spyware and anti-virus programs. Defrag. Then install QB, making SURE that you do NOT HAVE ANTI-VIRUS software running at the time of the install.

While this is happening, go to the computer where you can access the data. Make sure the file is in single user mode. BACKUP the data. Then, run a Verify and a Rebuild on the data. BACKUP the clean, valid file.

Slow windows performance, coupled with freakish software behavior, in my experience has been due to an unwanted software visitor. A spyware and virus removal might help. There is a site I use, majorgeeks, with a great resource for making absolutely sure your PC is clean.

Of course, a re-install of the operating system would work as well. Personally, the hassle of re-installing all the software on the system is a step I like to avoid.

Once you have QB installed on BOTH computers, make sure you have the same updates installed on each.

Now you have ONE company file on a single computer, and a second computer with QB installed.

Only ONE computer can access the company file at a time, unless you spring for a multi-user key. In single user mode, Intuit recommends the company file be stored on the same computer as the program. For ease of use, store the file on the computer you will be accessing the file from the most (hopefully the fastest computer).

If the computers are properly networked, you SHOULD be able to access the company file through the network, provided that the permissions are set properly, and that no other user is accessing the file. Remember, though, that backups and other utilities should only be performed from the QB that is on the same computer as the company file.
