My friend is running QB Pro 2006 and they are trying to move their company file to a network hard drive (which has been set up on every computer) to enable multi user (they tell me they have followed the instructions in the manual to the last step, but they're not that computer savvy) and they're running into a little problem. When they try to copy the folder they get an error message saying "access denied, please make sure file is not in use and then try again" but they tell me that they have completely shut down QB on both computers and nothing should be accessing the company folder. Is there some step they could have possibly missed? I don't have access to the manual from here so I can't really help them out.

How about firstly shutting off everything and repowering? That sometimes will fix file locks that are stuck.

With QB2006, the first user to open the file becomes the host. They need to look for a service running on that computer and terminating it. They then need to install QB on the server and open and host it there. I'm not 100% positive on all of this info, but I do know that there has been much chatter about this new hosting paradigm and hope this helps. You probably will have to do a little digging to find the service name, but all the info is available at QB. I have some more info on my website, I'll be happy to send you the link email me at support at egerer dot net

Quickbooks doesn't like when you just close out. Tell them to wait a while (if they haven't tried this already) and then go back in and do 'close company file'. That properly releases the file.
Also, rebooting the machines may work as someone else suggested.
Good luck

And of course make sure that the network hard drive folder that the company file resides on the permissions are set to share and allow network users permission to change
