Multiple Users

A customer wants a new installation of QuickBooks Premier 2009 Accountants Edition. They need two simultaneous users. Will this version work on a peer-to-peer (non-server) installation? Both computers are XP. If so, what is the procedure for obtaining the second user license if the software is purchased from Amazon?

The accountant said that Intuit told her that the retail versions of the software with the same name are actually crippled versions. Is there any truth to that? If so, where are the full versions?

It's been at least five years since I worked with a multiple user installation of QuickBooks.

Intuit ships only crippled versions of their software to retail outlets. Only Amazon can be depended upon to supply the real deal. Stay away from all retail outlets, only shop at Amazon for all your needs.

Michelle, are you saying that the retail versions are NOT crippled? If so, that statement is in disagreement with Haskel LaPort.

Also, any comments on multi-user licensing?

No, the retail versions are NOT crippled.

You will need to either purchase a multi user copy of Premier or buy a second copy so that you have 2 distinct licenses.

Is there a reason that you need Premier? For most busineses, Pro meets their needs. And it is a lot cheaper.

The accountant has specified Premier. I don't have an opinion.

Thanks for your response!

Chances are the accountant has Premier Accountant version and is not aware that his Premier can toggle to Pro. Unless there is a specific feature that requires Premier, spending the extra money is nonsense especially when you need a multi-user copy.

I would make the accountant justify the extra expense before making that kind of purchase but that's just my 2 cents worth.

Is this the same accountant that gave the bogus information about the versions being crippled? Doesn't sound like there is much credibility there. I bet it was suggested because the accountant doesn't know any better

Yes, same one. I'm caught in the middle here.

Only if you do a lot of business with the accountant. You could save your client quite a bit of money by suggesting they ask what reasons the accountant is pushing them towards the premier version. Specifically what features they need that Pro does not provide. As Michelle said, Pro version works very well for most end users.

It is possible that the acccountant does not know that Premier can open Pro files. Or he/she wants the client to get Premier so that he/she can install the newest version on their computer. (I've seen this several times)

Or perhaps the accountant does have a logical reason for recommending that version. I personally in the past recommended the accountant's version for those clients that require presentation quality financials or those that needed to track depreciation. Lets not infer lack of knowledge or dishonesty on him/her without knowing all the facts.

Back to the original question. Premiere is installed and functioning properly on the accountant's computer. The owner of the business wants to be able to access QuickBooks files from a second computer in her office. I purchased the single-user version from Amazon.com. To be able to access from the second computer, what steps do I need to take?

I assume the required steps are somewhat as below:

  1. Purchase a second license of the software (do I have to buy the entire program again?)
  2. Install the program on the second computer.
  3. Share the appropriate folder on the present installation.
  4. Tell the second installation how to find the first installation.

If you have any suggestions or best practices (or recommendations for cost savings on the second license), please let me know. Thanks!
