Pay Bills function extremely slow

Feb 16, 2007 11 Replies

Hi

I'm having a problem with the Pay Bills function on my QuickBooks. It has become so slow it is almost unusable. My pc and all the other fuctions on Quickbooks are functionally perfectly so it seems to only be a problem with Pay Bills. Even if I only pay one item it takes up to 10 minutes to post the transaction. If I check the task manager during this time it says that the Quickbooks programme isn't responding, but if I leave it long enough it completes the transaction and returns to normal. Anybody got any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

You don't say which version you're using. I had issues with things like this in older Mac versions. Anyway, have you tried a Verify & Rebuild of your data?

Sorry, I'm using Quickbooks Pro 2006. I did verify the data and there were no problems. I haven't tried rebuild. Is it safe and easy? I haven't done it before. I'll backup before I try it anyway. Thanks.

If you are multi user and someone else has the bank account open or someone else is in payables I've seen some pretty impressive slow downs.

I tried the rebuild and it has made no difference. I don't use multi user, I'm the only one using the software and the PC. I don't know where to go from here, it would take a day to process 30 payments.

Throw more horsepower at it.

What do you mean? What should I do?

I think the suggestion is to add more RAM to your PC.

What Operating system are you using? How much RAM (=horsepower) does it have?

I use Windows XP. The PC is less than a year old and has 1GB of RAM which should be plenty. Nothing else has slowed down, just the Pay Bill function in Quickbooks.

1 gig is more than enough. When was the last time you did a hard drive clean up, defrag & scan disk? Might not help but it certainl could not hurt.

Is there another computer with Quickbooks (or that you're allowed to install QB on?) that you can open your company file on? Doing so would tell you if its a problem with your file or a problem with the computer/program installation.

Thanks for the suggestions. The good news is it has started running ok again. I hadn't tried anything else, I had just tried one pay bill transaction every day to check if it was still slow and lo and behold today it ran perfectly and I've done a few. So I'll just keep my fingers crossed now that it stays like that. Thanks again for all your help and suggestions.
