Payroll - One employee

We are probably upgrading from QB Basic 2005 to QB Pro 2006 within the next week or so. One question, each time I tried to setup an employee for Basic, I was met with the demand to subscribe to an online service for tax tables, so I finally started keeping payroll in Excel.

Will QB Pro let me do payroll, keep employee records, quarterly reports, etc. without subscribing to their service? We have one employee that makes the same amount week after week. I can look it up once a year on a printed table.

thx . . . frank

You can use the manual payroll feature in the program, but it doesn't calculate taxes. Here is a link from the QB website

284059 You can also download a one time tax table update whenever you purchase a new QuickBooks program. Purchasing 2006 PRO will make you eligible for the one time download of the tax tables. In the QuickBooks program you should be able to sign up for a one time tax table update, by just NOT putting in your credit card number. If that doesn't work, you can always contact Intuit's customer service department, to sign up for the one time download.

Something to keep in mind though, is that the tax table will be current as of the moment you download it. If federal or state taxes change after the fact, the withholdings will no longer be accurate. If you're lucky enough to live in a state that doesn't believe in State taxes, you could potentially get away with just the one time download every year since federal taxes typically change just once a year, if that. It comes down to this though - if you don't purchase the DIY service, knowing when your taxes have changed is something that you'll have to stay on top of.

I appreciate the responses. I was somewhat dismayed to find out that software that advertises that it handles payroll charges for -- well -- handling payroll. We only have one employee, and I can handle it myself if I need to rather than pay $200 a year for a few reports and tax tables that I can download myself.

I appreciate the responses and will definitely investigate the free federal tables.
