Hi, I am running quickbooks pro 2005. When I run reports and see a minus sign next to a figure, what does this actually mean and also in the total columns? Sorry to appear thick!!

If it's a credit account, the minus means debit. If it's a debit account, the minus means credit.

Depends on the report you are running. Be more specific.
Sorry! Specifically payroll liability reports.
