Changes from Q'06 to Q'09 - Little Things

Fortunately, after several weeks of use, I haven't tripped overanything important that got worse from Q'06 to Q'09. I don't see anyimportant improvements, either, other than three more years ofdownloads, which is worth the $30 (after rebates).Some little things have improved. In Q'06, most of the time when areport or other window was opened, any window already open wasminimized. In Q'09, usually the window remains open. In particular,it is now possible to have two reports open at the same time andcompare them. (Way back, maybe 10 years or more, all Quicken windowsbehaved this way, so it was even possible to have two registers openat the same time.)Similarly, when doing a One-Step Update, '06 pretty much took over theprogram. '09 lets you do other things while the update is inprogress. (But anything requiring multiple clicks is tough becauseprogress bars keep popping up. Click fast or start over.)In Portfolio View, when switching among different views, Q'09remembers collapsed folders. For example, if a view is grouped byaccounts, and some of the accounts are collapsed, Q'06 used to expandthem all again the next time that view was opened. Now it remembersthem.In all my past upgrades, I had to play games to get rid of the adbanner at the bottom of the screen. In '09 I don't see any ads.A few minuses: It's substantially slower. But my machine is prettyold and I need to get a new one anyway.In the Q'06 Account List at the left of the window, an account can beselected by clicking anywhere on the line. In Q'09 you have to clickon the name. This is an unnecessary change and is annoying -especially if the account has a short name.It wants to make noise when starting up, but that can be suppressed bydeleting Sounds/qopen.WAV.Longstanding peeve: It's hard to use any other program during thelong interval while Quicken is starting up. The Quicken splash screeninsists on sitting on top of all other windows and is notwell-behaved.- Walt Bilofsky

If you wanted to know all expenses for each individual vacation, tags would be VERY useful.

For example, you vacation to wonderful Kiln, MS. Create a tag called Kiln. Now you can tag whatever expenses (categories) you have associated with that trip: Fuel, ammunition, mosquito repellant, hardhat, Pepto Bismol, high boots, radar detector, etc. -- without re-creating these categories for, say, your next vacation to Bogalusa, LA.

Auto is a great example. I just have one category and I use tags for the rest. I have Fuel, Tolls & Parking, Maintenance (or Service), etc. If I wanted to keep track of the specific auto, I also have tags for each car I own (you can have multiple tags on a transaction).

I'm guessing that since tags can cross categories, some may find them useful. I've been using Q for over 15 years and haven't come across the

need.
