corrupted file? Help.

Quicken 2008 Deluxe in Windows XP.

I developed a problem with my Quicken file. I download my transactions once a month. This month, all the transactions from a certain broker did not download. Quicken says "last download 12/3" but nothing downloaded from that broker since 11/3. All other accounts downloaded fine. I created a test file and tried downloading again from that broker and with the test file this broker's accounts downloaded fine.

So I am assuming my Quicken file has become corrupted somehow and I am not sure how to proceed. I do have backups but that may mean re-downloading 2 or more months of transactions (because I had to download twice on 11/3 to get that broker's transactions to download) from all brokers, credit cards, etc.

If I validate (how does one "super-validate" if necessary) how would I know what changes the validation made and might that not mess things further? Anything else I should try?

This file has many years worth of data.

Additional info:

When I download transactions from this broker I get the "whirling spirals" in all its accounts, but when finished, no flags and no new transactions appear. It seems to stay forever at the "Sending online instructions...", then switches to the next window (connecting) and ends.

The broker is Smith Barney which recently became "Morgan Stanley Smith Barney". That is the name on edit account screen.

I just ran Validate. It took a long time and ended with a box declaring that validation has completed successfully. But, it did not show me a log. The Validate folder is empty.

Where do I find the log of what it did? Should I know super-validate and if so, how?

More info, in case this helps:

The report that comes up after transaction downloads does not show Morgan Stanley Smith Barney at all in the list. I mean it does not shoiw it as having failed. It just does not mention it at all.

I decided to look at the "One Step Update Settings" and found that Morgan Stanley Smith Barney is listed but it's listing differend from the others in that just before the Passwords column it has a key icon. None of the other financial intitutions do.

Not sure what that means but it may explain why the connection fails.

Discovered the problem: The website Quicken is trying to contact is http:// instead of https://..... How and where do I change that in quicken?

Thanks.

How did you discover that?

I'm not sure.

I would try deactivating the account for downloading, then reactivating it. See the Change Online Services button on the Overview tab of the account.

The process may download transactions that were previously downloaded.

Backup first.

Thanks for replying.

When I could not download I looked at many things, one being Online Center, and then contact info. However it will not let me change anything on that screen which is why I asked.

Would Quicken not realize that these are duplicate transactions?

I have more than one account with this financial institution and none of them download new transactions. No problem with any other Financial Institutions downloads.

I have several accounts at Fidelity. Every so often they all stop downloading transactions. Usually, it's at the end of the month when every account has activity to download, but not every month.

Follow John's advice. He describes exactly what I do to fix the problem, until it happens again.

Do you get duplicate transactions?

I tried it once. I will try again.

Jeff

No duplicates. It's as if switch is opened, and transactions not yet downloaded are sent.

Thank you. I'll keep trying.

For others who might have the same problem:

Doing what John and Jim suggested worked. In my case I had to deactivate and re-activate the account several times with no effect, and then - suddenly the transactions downloaded. It may just be that the FI download site was busy and clogged up at the end of the month.

Thanks everyone.

Just to add something: John was correct (as usual). Some of the downloaded transactions were duplicates of previously downloaded ones ........

So be careful in accepting them.

Even if Quicken were trying to download from the wrong server, I think it is extremely unlikely that you would have any way to know that, with any degree of certainty; nor any way to change that directly. I don't think that your "investigation" proved what server Quicken was trying to use to download [I don't think that "contact info" will tell you what server Quicken will use to "download" (more likely it will tell you how to logon to "contact" a "help" person at the financial institution), or whether it was the wrong server to use].

If you want to see what servers are being used, I think you should check your OFXlog and your CONNLOG (both found in Quicken Help > Product and Customer Support).

In situations such as yours, my experience suggests that you almost always have to enlist Quicken's help in solving the Quicken problem (such as deactivating/re-activating an account for download ... or Validating ... or other approaches) ... even though, sometimes, it will turn out that, Quicken can't solve the problem without some help from Intuit programmers.

Thanks John. Actually after several unsuccessful deactivating and reactivating of the account, suddenly, a final re-activation worked. I wonder if it was not just that Morgan Stanley Smith Barney's servers were overwhelmed and the connection would time out for that reason. The reason I say that is because Q would show the "sending instructions" box for a very long time and then stop and disconnect. Jim Jensen said that would sometimes happen to him with his FI at the end of the month. So maybe the de-activating and re-activating was coincidental to the final successful download and it was the repeated attempts that finally got through. Don't know.

Thanks again John.
