I must be stupid, but cannot find how to do the simplest thing, that is to export all the share prices I have in Quicken into an EXCEL compatible format.
What am I missing? I know such a simple task must be possible, but where?

You have to make up a report and print that to a file, IIRC
You can export the price history for an individual security - open the price history for the security and select Print. In the Print pop-up select "Export to:" and a tab delimited Excel file is one of the options.
Google for "QPH File Processor". It's free and it can pull prices directly from your Quicken .QPH file into a comma, or tab, delimited file ... without running Quicken.
