Installing Quicken 09 with Win7

I installed Quicken 2010 on a Windows 7 machine. Then I realized this was a version I had been authorized to use, but I had to give it back. So I then installed Quicken 2009. I've since had problems in importing a .QIF file. This file opens fine on a Macintosh machine. On the Win 7 machine, I'm told the data is imported, but I can never find it!

In desperation, I tried removing it and reinstalling it. Installation went ok, but when I click on Quicken 2009 to open it, nothing happens.

I've read just recently that there are problems in reinstalling Quicken

2009, if you don't remove all the pieces of the previous version. Would a new version of Quicken fix all this?

Hi, Ed.

Let's see if I got this straight:

OK.

Not sure what this means, but...

Did you UNinstall Q10? HOW did you uninstall it: With Win7's Programs and Features? How and where did you then install Q09? Into the same folder where Q10 had been?

Where did the QIF file come from? Q09? Or from a later version of Quicken? Quicken's QDF and related file structures change from year to year. Newer Quicken (Q10) can usually read older (Q09) files, but older Q09 Quicken would not know how to handle newer Q10 (or Q11 or Q12) data. Between Q09 and Q10, the file structures changed a LOT, not like the incremental changes of other years.

I don't know anything about Macs and other Apples, but it might not matter in this case.

Step by step, HOW did you Import the QIF data? Include folder names and Quicken file names (disguised if you like).

Sounds like the remove/reinstall did not go as "ok" as you thought. WHERE did you install it: to the default location? What happens if you browse to C:\Program Files\Quicken and click on qw.exe? Perhaps your Quicken shortcut is pointing to the now-obsolete location.

True, of Quicken and many other apps. In addition to their files in the Quicken folder, their installation process also makes entries in your User account's AppData subfolder tree - and perhaps other places I don't know about. Simply deleting files will not undo all these other entries, leaving them to interfere with later installations.

A new version? You mean Q11 or Q12? Not likely. The most likely fix is to be sure that the old installation is really gone, then start from scratch with whatever version you have the proper installation media for.

But if you have a later version, why not try it - AFTER making sure that all existing installations have been removed.

After you've given us a clearer picture of just HOW you went from Q09 to Q10 and back to Q09 on the Win7 computer we should be able to help you.

yeah... this is one of those that will be interesting to follow...

You had Q10, but had to "give it back" - Once it's installed - you're done - there is no online auth like with MS products, unless they changed....

And what kind of QIF file - from where ? That file format is not really used by Quicken anymore, vs the more current download formats from Web Connect.

Are you trying to take your Q10 data and read it on Q09 ?
