Moving files from Q2005 to Q2001

I'm sorry if this has already been discussed - and it probably has been, although I don't see it...

I'm using Q2005, want to pass my Quicken files to a co-worker who's on Q2001. I've created a backup, and also exported as a qif file. My co-worker tells me he can't read either in Q2001.

Is there in fact a way for me to save or export my Q2005 data in a way my co-worker can read it in Q2001?

Thanks!

Q2001 *can* "read" ("import") QIF files; and that's the only way you can share your data with Q2001.

In theory, QIF should work. In practice, I've found that QIF files created in newer versions don't always import cleanly in older versions, if they work at all. I haven't gone through the QIF files to see what might have changed or what might be causing it. The QIF format is not very complex, but it would require looking at the files to figure out what is going on.

I don't think there's a general answer that will suddenly fix everything. It may be that if the accounts are exported one at a time, or boxes are unchecked until things work, that you will find out what will and won't get imported. If there's something in the new data that was not allowed in the old program, it would be a potential problem.

It all boils down to how much this is worth to you. If it were worth enough, somebody could go over the data, figure out what's wrong, and write a program to normalize things. But that would almost definitely be more expensive than just having your coworker upgrade to a newer Quicken. Ironically, the only reason I can think of for staying with the old one is better QIF support.

So unless there's a reason she won't upgrade, that leaves typing things in manually or deciding if there's another factor that you did not mention that warrants sticking with Q2001.
