News: Intuit disables Online banking

Just today I tried to download my credit card statement and received a message indicating that online banking for Quicken 2001 has been disabled and I need to upgrade to Quicken 2005 to re-enable it. This is very tragic as my computer cannot run anything with ease past 2002 and that version was disabled as well.

I guess I understand how those still using the DOS Quicken feel. I am on a far more recent version than Quicken for DOS ( know of many that still use this), but its tragic they disabled me. Those I know who still use DOS only PC's do so out of choice for the ease of use, lack of viruses, spyware, and low system resources that DOS uses.

I still use Quicken 8.0 , R7, for DOS ;-)

I feel your pain. The bad new is that the new version on Quicken IMHO is a complete nightmare when compared to the older versions. Especially for those of us who don't use a lot of features they seem to think people want to use. It might be just me but I find the new version very difficult to use to the point where I am afraid I might miss a payment or a transaction. The interface is way too busy and has no good way to customize it. Windows keep popping up all over the place, the items I used most have been reduced to tiny frames, buttons and boxes and can hardly see.

Is it just me?

Mike,

I hear comments like yours fairly frequently and I am a bit confused by them. Maybe you and I think differently. Or maybe my vision (or monitor) is better than yours. I have no trouble using or understanding (well most of the time) Q05. I find it has many useful enhancements. Some changes I don't care for and, hence, I ignore them. Overall, I have not had much trouble going from one release to the next. Generally, it seems like pretty much the same old thing with a bit of new paint. I do admit that it sometimes it takes a bit of time to understand what Intuit is "thinking" with each new release. It seems that it goes much smoother when you do things their way.

What bothers me is when I hit a bug that I can't work around. In Q03, I couldn't download transactions for some accounts as Quicken said there were

65535 transactions downloaded (looks like -1 clipped to 16 bits to me). I spent so much time fixing, refixing and wasting time on that problem, I finally upgraded to Q04 (against the advice of many in this group). The problem has never returned (knock on wood!). I also found Quicken to be a hog of resources and almost unusable in Win98. With WinXP and lots of RAM, I don't have a problem. Those to me are real problems.

What makes this difficult for everyone (including Intuit) is that user interfaces are a personal matter. I find the current interface fine (certainly not perfect), but you don't. I guess the issue is: do more people think like me or you? Intuit has screwed up if you are in the majority.

Just wondering. Where do i get the DOS Version? Does it still work with the datafiles from the bank? Because, if so, maybe i downgrade. :))) I only need it for my checking account. And that only to track whats going on.

Why? I know many HP 200LX users still using whatever Quicken shipped with that DOS palmtop.

Frankly I would not mind buying myself a 200LX and going to that palmtop and DOS quicken in place of my Palm Pilot.

Yes feature bloatware is a problem with software companies these days. Glad I'm using a older OS.

Good question John !

I use the DOS version for checking and savings accounts. It is fast and simple and is all that is needed.

I use Q'2003 for 401(k) and stock accounts becuase it is easy to update information based upon the stock (fund) symbol.

It is interesting how the software overcomes Y2K. Instead of a date such as;

4/29/05 the date is 4/29'05

When you are looking for upgrades, DOS isn't the only choice. I'm running Quicken for Windows v.4 (about 1994) on a Windows v3.1 machine. Has all the advantages as listed for DOS, above.

It was reported (in this newsgroup I think) that Quicken for Windows v.4 runs on XP.

Hello Joerg:

The DOS version 8 is no longer available unless you can find it in an aution house or someplace that has real old software. I have been using Quicken for a very long time and that's why I have Q'DOS v8.

The DOS version was not WINSOCK or TCP/IP compliant and only used Dial-Up modems to connect to Quicken and therefore it is not compatible with datafiles from the bank.

Too bad. I really like that idea, but now i am using Quicken2005. So far, everything works. I got a free copy of Quicken2000 from a debit counseling service. But somehow it wasn't able to read the datas from my bank. So i though, well, they want me to upgrade.

I don't mind to use an older version and Dos programs i like more, than windows versions. I don't know why. :)
