No Privileges to Open Data File?

Suddenly, for reasons unknown, when I try to open Quicken Deluxe 2009, I receive a message, "The current user does not have privileges to open this data file". I have no idea - I'm logged on as Administrator. The last time (This week) I received the same message, I removed the program and reinstalled it. It worked that day, no longer does. Any ideas out there as to why? Using Win 7 32 bit.

In reply to my own question, out of (simple) curiosity, I went into Quicken's properties page, and, under security, gave all users, including Administrator, permission to use the program. I still have no idea how the selections became unchecked in the first place.

I'm using Quicken 2010, where do you find this "properties Page"?

thanks

I went looking. The only thing I can find is Preferences under the Edit menu, or Setup. It's possible that under "Startup" where it says Password required to open data file .."No", that if you would click on "change", it might bring up a section on "security", I didn't want to mess with it, so I really don't know, but that's the only place I saw in Q2010 where that would be.

Right click on the Quicken program icon. Properties will be on the bottom of the context menu. Click on it and select the Securities tab.

Hi, Tim - and Aggravated.

As I've said here several times, I'm very weak on the subject of Permissions and Security. But I do have a couple of comments.

Just to clarify, that's the Security tab, not Securities. Nothing to do with stocks and bonds. ;^}

And you are right: These are the Windows settings for Security, not Quicken's. To get to that Security tab, right-click on your qw.exe file, probably in C:\Program Files (x86)\Quicken. Or, if you have an icon for Quicken on your Win7 Taskbar, you can right-click on that - but then you have to right-click again on the Quicken icon on the context menu that pops up, and then click Properties here. Or right-click on Quicken in your Win7 Start menu.

Note that Quicken's Properties window may look different and have different tabs, depending on HOW you get to it - on which click-path you follow. If you right-click on Quicken in your Win7 Start menu, then click on Properties, you will still see a Security tab. But this window will not be identical to the one you get via the Task Bar, and the one you get via qw.exe will be a third version. Oh, and right-click on your .qdf file to see a 4th version.

One more thought is that you might need to Take Ownership of your Quicken folder. There are at least a couple of ways to do this, using the GUI or an Administrator:Command Prompt window.

As I said, I don't know much about this topic. Just wanted you to be aware of these quirks. When you figure them out, maybe you can explain it to me and the rest of us. ;^}
