Opinion, please upgrading from Q 2003

Have been using Quicken since the old DOS days. Am currently running 2003. Have NOT been using any of te download facilities.

Recently started playing with the download for very specific accounts. Now have received notice from Intuit that the download capabilities are being discontinued for my version later this month.

Haven't been following the pros/cons about Q2006 and the ability to download is NOT essential.

Thoughts anyone? Please.

Hi Mom;

I've been happy with Q06 Premier since last year. Works like it is supposed to. Handles ALL my business on-line without a problem. Only time something goes wrong is when a Financial Institution may have a problem and that solves itself soon enough. Stamps and checks are a thing of the past for paying bills. You might be interested in giving it a try.

Sure, it could be improved, but if you liked 03, you should be happy with

Rex's Mom,

My mom just upgraded to Quicken 2006 Basic, and she hates it. I have posted elsewhere in this group with my comments.

In short, there is so much distracting, extraneous baloney that it's frustrating.

For example, it's absolutely beyond me why she would need or want to "rate" the transaction after she wrote a check to the neighborhood pharmacy that she has patronized for 50 years, but that's the type of "features" included in this version. Of course, you can't disable these "helpful tools."

I'm fairly technical, but even I'm appalled by all the crap they've added and the fact that most of it can't be disabled. (Microsoft occasionally does this with their software, but they're getting better.)

You will also lose the ability to import and export data from Quicken. You can save a backup file in .QIF format, but since Quicken 2006 no longer supports this format, you can't do anything but import it into a program that does -- see the Intuit site about this.

If you do decide to make the change, I'd suggest checking with your financial institutions to ensure that they support the new "improved" Quicken file format.

P.S. If you decide to but the new Quicken, want to sell me your old version?

Saw your original post about your Mom's problem and that's what sort of triggered the question.

Frankly, don't use download enough to really care about keeping it and it sounds like the bells & whistles would annoy me also. Like you, I am fairly computer-saavy and I wish developers would stop FORCING me to accept their new whiz-bangs.

I guess it's back to e-Bay to try to buy a 2004 version. BTW, 2005 also changed download format! and it has become the default for financial institutions, although there seems to also still be the option to d/l in qif.
