Payment with a fixed split amount- not a fixed percentage.

I have searched this group and did not have any luck finding a solution, so maybe some one can help me.

Each time I go to the grocery store and buy groceries I always use my debit card and take out additional cash- $40 every time. When I download this transaction into quicken and go to accept it, I have to go into the split window, subtract $40 from the amount and create a new item to the Misc Cash Expense category for the $40. Since the transaction amount differs every time I buy groceries I can't use the 'Memorize percentages' option.

Is there a better way to handle this type of transaction? I am using Quicken 2005.

TIA

Just memorize the amounts in your latest transacation. Next time you enter the transaction, change the debit amount in the register, then enter the Groceries amount in the split so everything balances. You'll have to update the total transaction amount and Groceries split each time, but at least it will remember the $40 split.

Actually, I think it's somewhat simpler than that. Since op is downloading the actual transaction, if the memorized transaction is for a different amount than downloaded transaction, Quicken will automatically offer the Edit Split dialog. In that dialog, op can place cursor on grocery amount, open the calculator, key the "difference" (with minus sign when needed) appearing at bottom of split window, and click Enter. No change to the transaction amount need be keyed because it will have been downloaded correctly.

But I suspect op is really looking for a capability that has been requested before: the ability to specify a memorized transaction with some split lines of fixed amounts and other split lines with percentages of the remaining amount. In the case of the two split lines in op's transaction, for example, no modification to the downloaded transaction would be needed at all (a fixed $40 split line and 100% of the remaining transaction amount to groceries). I am fairly certain this capability has been submitted as a suggestion to Intuit, but it would not hurt if op were to add to the list.

Thanks for the suggestions-- at one time or another I have tried both.

John is correct. I am looking for the ability to specify a memorized transaction with some split lines of fixed amounts and other lines as percentages or the complete remaining amount.

I was hoping Q06 might have added this feature. I guess I am going to submit an enhancement request.

Ah yes, I see. I missed that you were downloading transactions. Thanks John and Steve, for the correction. I thought you were manually entering the transactions. That would be a very nice feature to have -- split transactions with some lines memorized and others more configurable.
