Quicken 2002 Deluxe

I've been using Quicken for business and for my own personal accounts since

2002. I caught on fast and learned how to do reports and graphs. I've had internet banking all along and reconcile regulary. I hardly ever have a problem with my balance being off and when I do it doesn't take long to find the problem. About a 3 months ago when I went to reconcile I got the Reconciliation Notice viewed at

. I guess I don't see what it is trying to say so I just click on Ignore, type in my new balance and it comes up 0.00 as it should. I always make a backup and then go back and try another reconcile and try to adjust the balances it claims are wrong. If I do that, my balance does not come out right. So of I just hit "Ignore" every time, enter my balance and it always comes out. So what do I have to do to get rid of that notice popping up every time.Hopefully someone here has experienced this and knows the solution. Many thanks if you can help!

The error message indicates that a cleared transaction either was changed or was deleted. The only way to get rid of the popup message is to hit Resolve. It will enter an adjusting entry so that the ending balance matches your bank statement. You will only have to do this once to get the error corrected.

I will try and go through it again. But the problem is, it doesn't *need* adjusting. It is right the way it is. When I hit "resolve" it comes up with three entries that are supposedly wrong. If I let it adjust them, then my balance is off the amount of the so-called adjustments.

since you know what the 3 transactions are, check for duplicate entries. check to see if they are uncleared.

An alternative would be to do a manual reconciliation so that you can see the transactions that Q wants to clear. If you are entering the correct ending balance then your account should be okay UNLESS there are transactions that have never been cleared.

The ending balance in the bank rec is the cumulative sum of all of the cleared transactions. something has caused that number to change. That is what is causing the popup message. You will have an ending bank rec balance that is different from the bank ending account balance if there are uncleared transactions.

The dialog you're seeing is a function of what was called "Smart Reconcile"; it hasn't been in any version of Quicken since around Q2005; I haven't used it for years, so the following is all based on memory.

I recall that the way to "Resolve" the problem was to delete each statement (in the Resolve process) starting with the most current and going back until the oldest statement with a problem had been deleted. Then re-reconcile.

I'm pretty sure you could treat all the deleted statements as a single statement for the re-reconcile process, if you wanted to minimize the effort.

I would backup before starting the above.

[At one time, there was a Quicken bug that caused a previously successful reconcile to become "unreconciled" when you changed the category of one of its reconciled transactions. I can't recall which Quicken versions were affected, or whether the bug was fixed before Smart Reconcile was dropped altogether.]

That might be what has happened. A while back I merged two categories since they basically were the same. No entries were lost; just some moved to another category. When I click to reconcile, the Reconciliation Notice comes up, I click "ignore" and the correct previous balance is always there. I enter the current balance and it always comes up to "0.00" unless, of course, I have made a *real* mistake. I'm not 100% sure that this problem started when I merged those categories or not, but it's likely. I just wish there's some way I could disable the notice. I'll try the things Laura mentioned but I'm betting my reconcile will not come up zero.

Thanks for the input.
