Quicken Bill Pay problems

Quicken Bill Pay users need to be aware that Metavante, the current financial processing firm used by QBP, can lose checks, at least temporarily. Apparently, they lack internal controls to track the check processing they do. They fall back on finger-pointing and say it is the bank's fault or USMail who lost the check. Of course the bank does the same thing. In the recent incident the check actually turned up in the destination bank 10 days after QBP said they mailed it.

What is needed is a timestamp that is imprinted on the back of the check every time the check changes hands. Some examples are user requested a check, check queued for printing, check printed and addressed to yyy, check check mailed via USPS office xxx. Banks should apply timestamps such as check received for account zzz, check validated, ....etc. And every timestamped event would be tagged with an employee's name who caused the state transition.

In my case in point, I requested a check to a different account in the SAME BANK on 9/24/05 and to be received on 9/30/05. QBP said they mailed out a check to the destination account on 9/27/05 and used the correct US mail address. Until 10/7/05, the destination bank had no knowledge of the check and tried to blame USPS and QBP for losing it.

However, early 10/8/05 I received a call from the bank saying the check had mysteriously appeared and was processed.

I intend to write my House Representative and ask if he can get the laws changed to include detailed timestamps mention above.

Good luck!

Electronic payments recently surpassed check payments in this country for the first time on an annual basis. The old method of physically mailing checks is going away - From 2000 to 2003, an average annual rate of decline of over 4% check reductions has been seen, as well as Check 21 when a FI can pull the physical copy out of the stream at any point (as far as I can tell) to convert to an electronic check for subsequent processing.

I don't think there's much of a chance of some major infrastructure changes to what you're proposing for physical handling of checks in the cards.

You are probably right, but there is no reason that the timestamps need to be physically printed on checks. They can be collected electronically. A good example is the way internet packets can do this.

I no longer use the Quicken Bill Pay feature and haven't for about three years or so. All of my accounts have a web interface for paying their bills and I now use these, free of charge. I pay all my credit cards, electric bill, cellular and land line phone bills this way. My bank, Wells Fargo, has online bill paying fully integrated with their website. Dropping the Quicken Bill Pay service simplifies my life and eliminates one more payment I have to make every month.

Using the online BillPay features at several financial institutions doesn't allow quick reports to be generated that include them all. Of course you can enter all transactions into Quicken and assign them to the right category, but that is double work and error prone.

You can also choose to bank with a bank that offers Quicken Bill Pay integration. Today many banks either offer Quicken or MS Money integration for free. Some banks require that you have a certain account or maintain a min balance to get Quicken Bill pay Via "Bank". I can list some major banks that offer Quicken or MS Money Bill pay. Most if not all banks contract out this service to Checkfree Corp or Metavante. Checkfree Corp was Quicken and MS Money orignal Bill pay company and is the largest bill pay providor in America.

Btw I bank with Citibank and have had Quicken Via Citibank form 1998 when Citibank discounted there direct access. I never had a problem with it. I enter all my bills to be paid 1 day before the due date and I have never had 1 bill pay late.

Bank of America - Current promo in Ca. If you have "MyAccess" Checking account and get a min of 2 direct deposit a month for a total of $300 you can get either Quicken Bill pay Via B of A or MS Money Via B of A. They contract out the service to Checkfree. Also free with Prima Account. All other account $9.99 Monthly Charge.

Chase - Free with Chase Select Checking which requires Min balance requirement of 25K between deposit/brokerage and loan accounts. Chases Supports boths Quicken and MS Money. $9.99 for all other account. Service is contracted out to Checkfree Corp.

Citibank - Free With "Everything Counts" account or better. $10K between deposit/brokerage accounts or $20K with loan balances. $9.99 for all other accounts. Citibank only offers Quicken. Contracted out to Checkfree Corp.

HSBC - Offers service for free on all accounts. Even there free Checking account with no direct deposit or min balance requirement. They support both Quicken and Ms. Money. They provide this service internal so works like most web bill pay services and not like true Quicken or MS. Money Bill pay service where you enter due dates but you enter the date you want them to start to process your payment.

Key Bank- Key Advantage Banking - $10K between deposit account. $9.99 for all other accounts. Supports both Quicken and MS Money. Service is Contracted out to Metavante.

U.S. Bank - Elite Checking - requires $5K between all deposit accounts. $9.99 for all other accounts. Supports both Quicken and MS. Money. Service is contracted out to Metavante.

Wachovia Bank - Crown Select Banking $10K between deposit account or $20K between deposit/brokerage and loan accounts. $9.99 for all other accounts. Supports both Quicken and MS. Money. Service is contracted out to Metavante.

Wells Fargo - Does not waive fee's no matter what account you have. $10.99 a month. Supports both Quicken and MS Money. Service is contracted out to Checkfree Corp.

Now I am not saying Checkfree Corp is better or worse than either Metavante or banks own bill pay service. Information Pulls from thread from MSN forums.
