return on investment wont register 2004

Using Quicken 2004 Deluxe.

In my investment portfolio view, there are some funds that were purchased as long as 4 or 5 months ago that still don't register a "return on investment year to date". Instead, that column says N/A

When I look at the register the purchase is entered and does give the date of purchase, the number of shares and the price per share.

How can I get the portfolio view to register the return on investment?

TIA

Sorry, but you can't! Quicken continues to be broken in this area. Look through the Help file and you'll find that all these calculations use Q's IRR routine. That requires a price on the day before the period in question and the price on the last day of the period. "YTD" seems to mean a full year (?????) to Quicken so if you didn't own the security a year ago, you can't get a YTD price. That's why Quicken displays "N/A".

It's really sad that Intuit has not fixed this. It has been around for years. They continue to sell as new skins every year without fixing things.

This is not correct. You must have owned the security on Dec 31 of the previous year ... but you do not have to have owned it for a year.

There is nothing to fix; Quicken calculates its values based on the formulas it provides.

Thanks for explaining why this is happening.

Now - is there some other column I could add to the portfolio view which would allow me to get a quick glimpse of how all my funds/stocks are doing on a year-to-date or 3 month or 6 month basis?

There are lots of columns available. The best thing to do is go to customize the view, then select Help. It will tell you what all the available columns do.

Based on what I see, I expect Gain/Loss (%) will do what you want.

Thanks - that looks like a good bet

I have a similar issue to the thread title. I too have Quicken 2004 (Premier) and made a stock purchase recently. However it has yet to show up in the Investing Center's Portfolio. Conversely, issues I jettisoned months back still show. How does one customize, even if manually, this area?

TIA,

If you are saying that your new security does not appear in the Portfolio tab at all, that's not similar to the issue of this thread, which is basically about seeing values in Quicken "return" calculations.

You definitely can manually customize the Portfolio tab; and there a several parameters that can affect whether a security appears on the tab. With the Portfolio tab open, click "Options > Customize current view".

But if you are seeing securities that you no longer hold any shares of, and not seeing securities that you do hold, my guess is that you have the wrong "As of" date selected (near the top of the tab on the right).

For securities you no longer hold but that are appearing in Portfolio View - check under 'Options' and verify that 'Show Closed Lots' is not checked.

I was able to manually de-check those securities I no longer have thanks to your method. However the new issue is not listed in the "Securities to include" list. My investment account transaction list *does* show the issue as correctly having been "bought". Yet it shows not in the aforementioned list. Any idea why not?

Thanks. The "Show Closed Lots" was unchecked and yet some securities since sold still showed. I've corrected that with the info above. However one recently purchased security stubbornly does not show.

If the security is "hidden" and you have told Quicken not to "View hidden securities", the security will not appear in the "Securities to include" list.
