Is there a straightforward way to download transactions (say from my credit card) and enter them directly into quicken? I wind up having to cut and paste an exhaustive set of transactions, while i'd like for the pasting to be automatic, once i accept all transactions.

If you have the account activated for online, you should be able to do an update and have the transactions show at the bottom of the window. There you accept or edit them for entry into the registry. Select the account and edit it. Use the Online services tab to activate the service. Some places charge for this and some places don't have it. If you have an updated list of financial institutions, yours might be listed, or check below. Qif downloads are not available in Q2005 or 06.
