turbo tax and Updates

Hello All,

I know this is a quicken group, but many of us quicken users also do turbo tax. Turbo Tax for TY-05 has a problem in that in some cases it fails to finish the updating process after it downloads the updates to the software.

On Sunday last, I got tired of it trying every time I opened up the program and decided to fix it myself. Before that I sought assistance from the Forum on Turbo Tax's website, but the wait was so long, I then checked the FAQ's to see if others were having the issue. Many were.

In addition to be safe, I backed up my Quicken Data Sets, just to be safe, you will see why in a bit.

Here is my solution. I uninstalled Turbo Tax by using the Control Panel, add/remove programs/ Turbo Tax - Uninstall, you can also use the uninstall feature in the Turbo Tax Directory, and please make sure you back up your tax forms that have been created. I then deleted the directory and all sub directories from C:\Program Files\Turbo Tax. I then cleaned the registry of all references to turbo tax, of which there are three types. They are: turbo tax; turbotax; ttax.

Turbo tax puts your tax files in the X:\documents and settings\your profile\My documents\Turbo Tax - location. The registry has references to those locations, don't delete those entries when cleaning the registry. I cleaned all references to Turbo Tax as mentioned above. I then rebooted my computer. Unknown to me, turbo tax shares a .dll file with quicken, which is left around until the reference to it is deleted from the registry, then quicken is broken, but you won't know it until you try to back up your quicken file.

Once I have cleaned all the references to those parts of the registry, I then restarted the system, reinstalled Turbo Tax, and then manually installed the update, by going into "Start - Programs - Turbo Tax Update - and pointing to the update file. Once the update had run, it reboots the program or the whole computer, cannot remember which. Then when you open Turbo Tax, it wants to install updates, and it's now successful.

The problem seems to stem from a .dll file left over from a previous version of Quicken/Turbo Tax that is not now used in the current version, but somehow blocks the updates from working. When the updates fail, it tells you the file name, but then re-writes the error windows so fast, I could not get the file name, otherwise I would just have deleted the file.

Anyway this works for me, it now completes checking for updates, and finishes loading them if present.

Hope this helps all, and if a Intuit Programmer is reading, please pass this along to your support folks so you can put out a patch.

Sincerely,

Old Man River.
