uninstall Quicken 2005 before installing 2006?

What do most people do when installing Q 2006 deluxe? Do you uninstall old edition (in my case Q deluxe 05) or does the software automatically do that?

Haven't gotten Q06 yet (TTAX isn't out yet), but I've never manually deleted the previous version (and I update just about every year). IIRC, Q deletes the earlier version for you....

My process is to:

1) Back up the current account file(s). 2) Validate the account file 3) Back up the account file(s) again. Different location or name 4) Print several reports that show account information like amounts, etc. 5) Install the update 6) Print the same reports as in step 4 7) Compare the reports and deal with any differences.

I can report that I have yet to have an unsuccessful update in the past decade or so....

I manually uninstall last version of qkn as on 2 updates (I think 2002 to 03 & 03 to 04) the process qkn uses did not completely uninstall the app. This means a reinstallation of old version, manual uninstall, & then installation of new version with reboots in between. YMMV. The other thing I do that Hank did not mention prior to installing new version is after validating, I copy the data set.

I think Q2006 is much better at the uninstall. But it still leaves a trace or two (but manual uninstall will not remove those traces either). If you have trouble after an uninstall/reinstall, try it again and after the uninstall remove all folders/files containing "Quicken" in the name. In newer versions, one place to look is in "Documents and Settings".

I would do the "Copy" before the Validate.

I agree with John, here. I've yet to have the validation process mess up a file, but I've heard (and Intuit warns) that it can happen. Not worth the risk of data loss, so I'm extra careful about copying my file before I do anything major to it.

I have always let Quicken setup do the uninstall of the old version, never had a problem in all the years I've been using Quicken (more than 10). Yesterday I decided to revert back to QP2006 R1, so I ran Quicken's uninstall, deleted the Quicken directory left in C:\Program Files (my data files are saved on another partition), and then I edited the registry to yank out all data related to Quicken. Then I reinstalled QP2006 and declined the R2 update. All is well. :-)

Margaret

I like to make several 'copies' and put them on different media. CD's, DVD's and backup HDD (Ghost image) I then pick my working copy, validate it, check it again and then uninstall the old and on with the new. Those extra copies are never touched unless something really wacky happens. I can usually tell if everything is ok within a month or less when the reconciles come out OK. Mike
