upgrading from 2004 to 2007

I've been running Quicken Deluxe 2004 and will soon have to upgrade because I'll no longer be able to download qif files from my bank.

Can I just install 2007 Deluxe over 2004 Deluxe?

Should I uninstall 2004 first? If I do that and then I install 2007, will it pick up my data files and convert them?

And will it know how to find my bank and brokerage (Fidelity) or will I have to install those as if they were never used before?

Thanks for an advice and experience.

The most important thing is to make backups, using Quicken. Make sure you get at least a couple of backups onto CD, or at least onto a memory stick/flash drive.

Then from within the old version of Quicken do a File|file operations|copy. Give the "new" fileset a different name (of course). Then use that file set and do a File|file operations|validate. Note any remarks that Quicken gives, and then make more backups from the validated fileset.

If you get any remarks you don't understand, post a question.

If you do not trust what might be happening, use a program like Acronis True image to make an "image" of your hard drive(s) so you can easily write this back onto your drive(s) if something gets really screwed up. (Having an image is a "good thing" (TM) in many circumstances.

Then the best thing may be to install the new version, but not a different location then where your old version is. For most people, it's OK to let the installation process uninstall the old version.

You should be able to upgrade. You should:

1) Backup the database files using the built-in backup 2) Copy the database using the included file utility to a safe location 3) Generate reports that will give you the balances and other information that you will need to verify that nothing changed 4) Load the copy and run Validate on it. If you have errors, clear it up before you proceed (or verify that it has no impact) 5) Load the original database 6) exit Q and run the install program off the CD. It will backup your database files, uninstall the current version, install the new one and convert your database 7) Run the same reports you did previously and verify that nothing changed. 8) Welcome yourself to the 20th century.... ;-)

I recently upgraded from 04 deluxe to 07 deluxe. I had backed up my quicken files to an external usb hard drive, to have just in case. I also, had imaged my system as well.

When I ran the install of 07, it uninstalled 04, then proceeded to install

07 and convert my quicken data files over to 07. Everything went smooth for me, with no issues that I have seen so far, have been running it for about 2 months now.

I just upgraded from 04 basic to 07 basic and had the same experience as Don. Quicken uninstalled 04. I did not have the option to install 07 to a different directory so that I would have both programs on my computer. I guess Quicken only allows one version of the program on your computer at a time. I did make a copy of my Q files prior to the upgrade just in case something went wrong and I had to go back to 04 but everything converted without problems.

It's not clear from this sentence why you believe you will not be able to download qif files from your bank anymore.

If your bank intends to stop making qif files available, there is nothing you can do about that.

But if you are talking about Intuit's "sunset" policy, that does not affect your ability to download or import qif files. You will be able to *download* qif files as long as your financial institution(s) make them available - no matter what version of Quicken you use. And you will be able to *import* qif files into Q2004 forever.

Not really.

You can reinstall Q2004 now and Quicken will not complain.

And if you follow the instructions in the following kb article, you can install a new version of Quicken without ever having the older version removed.

Thanks for the link. I just wish they had been consistant with how most other programs installer run. One needed to KNOW in advance of the Ctrl-Shift trick to allow me to install the new program to a separate folder. I don't think they really want us to do that or they would not have required this little trick.

I agree: Intuit has always discouraged users from having multiple versions installed at the same time. Starting with Q2006, they got a bit more forceful about it by making the default that the older version would get deleted. [Interestingly, starting with Q2006, Quicken has a better method for avoiding conflicts between different versions ... though it's main purpose was probably to avoid conflicts between multiple files for the same version.]

And as I said, you can still reinstall your older version, and have both the new and the old installed at the same time (though if do, you may still experience some minor difficulties with the version that was not the last one installed).

Because the statement from Quicken is: "As of April 30, 2007, Online Services and live technical support for Quicken 2004 will no longer be available. These services include downloading financial data from your bank..."

Quicken plays absolutely no role in the "downloading" of qif files; anyone in the world can download qif files without ever having owned a single version of Quicken or any other financial software. Quicken's role in qif files is to "import" them. And Quicken has never required an internet connection to import qif files. Your older version of Quicken can not eliminate your ability to download qif files.

If a user needed only qif files for updating their Quicken data (and did not use Quicken's quote downloads), that user would never need to upgrade. Q2004 will import qif files forever. (I can't say whether financial institutions will make qif files available for downloading forever ... but that's really a different story.)

They didn't need to say that. As I said, Quicken plays no part in the downloading of qif files, and there is no internet connection with Intuit servers require to import qif files. There is no way for Intuit to prevent you from downloading and importing qif files in versions which never had any qif file import restrictions.
