I pay our real estate taxes electronically on the taxing authority websites. There is a 90¢ fee if I pay by electronic check, which is well worth it. A stamp is 55¢ and then I have to wonder if the payment got there on time or at all. I also get a payment receipt right away by printing to a PDF file.

Only makes sense--to avoid a service charge larger than the cost of a stamp. WTF.

That also makes sense...especially when one considers the possible late charges on an amount as large as a real estate tax might be.

Sure, if you don't mind your banking information being "out there" again.

Bank balances in Canada are insured by the CDIC. Any fraudulent withdrawals are reversed as long as they are reported within a reasonable time.

In 67 years I have NEVER had a fraudulent withdrawal.

Bank balances are insured by the FDIC. Fraudulent withdrawals are not protected as much as are fraudulent credit card charges. I do not use debit cards or allow others to tap into my bank accounts for this reason.

I have to use a debit card to for ATM access, though. Not for anything else, though.   By using credit cards as much as possible to pay bills, payment is effectively "aged", allowing me to delay payment as long as possible.

You many be able to insist on getting an ATM only card, not a debit card.

Definitely depends on bank. Last time I tried that I was told the bank no longer offered than as an option.

True, but sometimes you have to press hard.

That is what B of A told me, and then two years later B of A notified me that the debit card was compromised. I had never used the debit card, other than to make an ATM deposit, and it was locked in a safe at all other times. B of A said sometimes crooks just guess. Uh huh.

I told them if they had just given me an ATM only card, this problem wouldn't have occurred. Then they gave me and ATM only card.

Press hard. Good luck.

Same for me. That's the only thing I use it for. I could use a credit card, but if I did I would incur a change.

I don't use an ATM Often, since I rarely pay for anything with cash. I only pay my barber with cash, since he charges for credit card use.

Yes. I do the same, for that reason and two others:

  1. I get airline mileage on credit card use. I rarely pay for flights.
  2. Protection on credit card use is better than on debit card use.
