Connecting to Financial Instituton

Is there anyway to switch from Express Web Connect to Web Connect?

I believe there is; but only if your financial institution offers Web Connect downloads, which not all financial institutions do.

Why wouldn't it be as simply as de-activating the account and then re-activating?, and if the FI is equipped for Direct Web Connect, Q would pick that up upon the re-activation ?

In the account details, online tab, there's a button for changing connection method.

[I had been hoping to get some feedback from the op before getting into the details, but ....]

While de-activating is likely to be one of the first things to do, re-activating may not be in the mix.

First of all, there is the question of how many accounts with the same logon credentials at the same financial institution are involved.

Secondly, in my observation, re-activating may not (does not in the one case I tested) provide the opportunity to elect Web Connect ... even when Web Connect is available.

And I would not recommend de-activating then initiating a re-activation just to find out that the financial institution does not support Web Connect downloads. too much trouble, if Web Connect is not available (also note my first observation above).

A straight-forward way to activate an existing manual (not-activated) Quicken account for Web Connect is to download a QFX file from the financial institution and during the Quicken import of that QFX file, tell Quicken to link the QFX file to the desired Quicken account. That prevents Quicken from making any assumption about the Connection Method desired.

Another approach is to use the Add Account dialog, then (depending on the Quicken version/release) you would use the "Advanced Setup" or "Advanced Options" to have Quicken present the available Connection Methods. For my test case (referred to above), I was given the Web Connect choice when I took that approach.

I don't know of any such button, at least not one so labelled.

What specific button are you referring to?

There are three connection methods:

Direct Connect Express Web Connect Web Connect

Some financial institutions support all of the connection method but many do not.

If the financial instituion supports Web Connect, you will be able to sign in to the financial institution's web site, download available transactions and import a QFX file.

If the register is setup for Express Web Connect and you want to switch to Web Connect, you should deactivate the Online Services and clear the financial institution's name on the General tab of the Account Details window. You may want to review:

Note: When switching connection methods, duplicate transactions may be imported. You may want to review:

That's EXACTLY what I was suggesting. Burt John had a lot of caveats about that, and I assume his knowledge has those gotchas that my suggestion my involve.

No. That is not EXACTLY what you had suggested.

You had referenced a fictitious "Direct Web Connect" connection method and falsely stated "Q would pick that up upon the re-activation".

Thanks.

That's interesting. I've checked a number of my online activated accounts and none have that option ... including my USAA Federal Savings Bank credit card that is using Direct Connect to download.

I'm looking in Q2020 Home, Business & Rental property R29.16.

Since I've never seen the option, I can't say how well it works, but I suspect it might not make the switch from Express Web Connect to Web Connect.

If you have any Express Web Connect accounts that allow Web Connect and have the option shown in your link, you could make a Quicken Copy of your file and test the process in that Copy.

I'm running Quicken Deluxe R29.16. Unfortunately the only Express account I have does not offer the option to change.

I just checked all of mine. Some don't have the option, but Citibank, Chase, and Bank of America do.

Interesting.

I have BofA checking and savings accounts setup for Direct Connect: none have the "Change connection method" option.

But my Direct Connect Chase credit card does have that option.

If I have the time later, I will try to test with the Chase account.

Note: Step #4 in the KB article says to use "Deactivate", if the "Change connection method" option is not there". And Step #5 in the KB article says to "click on "Advanced Setup" (which may be called "Advanced Options" in the newest Quicken releases).

Since I have no accounts that offer the "Change connection method" option, at this time (*) I can't say how that option will act; but it seems possible that it may act differently than "Set up now". That is: it may act as the KB article suggests.

But deactivate/set up now do not act as the KB article suggests.

When you click "Deactivate", then click "Set up now", you do not get any option to click "Advanced Setup" (or "Advanced Options") - at least not when deactivating/reactivating an Express Web Connect account that only allows Express Web Connect or Web Connect.

In other words: in the above situation, you can not switch from Express Web Connect to Web Connect: the account will be reactivated to use the Express Web Connection download method.

[I also tested with an account setup for Direct Connect (where the financial institution also offered Web Connect): deactivating and reactivating that account did not provide any opportunity to choose "Advanced Setup" (or "Advanced Options"), so the resulting activation produced a Direct Connect "Connection Method", the same as before I deactivated the account. Once again, I could not switch to Web Connect when taking the deactivate/reactivate approach.] [Note: even when you create a new Quicken account and choose Web Connect for the Connection Method, Quicken will just create a manual account - and tell you to go online and login to your financial institution, download your transactions, then either the download will automatically start Quicken and initiate a QFX file import, or you will manually start Quicken and use File > File Import to import the downloaded QFX file (basically as I suggested in an earlier post in this discussion).]

My tests were run in Q2020 Home, Business & Rental Property R29.16

[(*) I have just discovered that I have an account with the "Change connection method" option. I will try to test with it later.]

I have tested the "Change connection method" option with my Direct Connect Chase credit card.

Immediately after clicking "Change connection method", I was given the option to select the two remaining "connection methods" available for Chase: Express Web Connect, and Web Connect.

I chose Web Connect, and Quicken popped up a dialog telling me it would have to first "disable Direct Connect" (and asking, if that is what I want). Since that is just what I want, I clicked "Yes".

Then I received the same information I got at the end of the Deactivate/Re-Activate process, telling me that I sill need to logon to my financial institution web site and download my transactions. After which either the download will automatically start Quicken and initiate a File > File Import, or I will manually start Quicken and manually initiate the File > File Import process.

So using the "Change connection method" would appear to be a somewhat simpler approach than deactivate/re-activate (though pretty much the same process will be happening ... just some of it taking place behind the scene).

But it will. You didn't indicate otherwise either. "If the register is setup for Express Web Connect and you want to switch to Web Connect, you should deactivate the Online Services and clear the financial institution's name on the General tab of the Account Details window. "

I don't see what difference you said from what I said?

That is your problem.
